...and I had always thought that recycling an old thread was preferred to starting the same subject over again...
I don't think I've actually brought back a dead thread though.

there is certainly a difference between necro trolling and necroing, although both are irritating.

There are so many threads and it's annoying when there are heaps of threads on the same topic when one could be recycled.

well, I think that is reasonable when threads are not too old, and are more easily accessible for being more recent, but when it comes to a very old thread, I suppose it would be better to make a new one, to avoid replying to a member who no longer is here, therefore they can't respond.

Yeah. We like to keep old threads open if possible but in most cases it's preferable to start a new thread rather than necro an old one, because the aim of most threads is to have a discussion and that's impossible when the original participants are gone or have forgotten about the discussion. It causes all kinds of confusion because many posters do not check dates on the posts to which they're responding. Also, smaller discussions have the advantage of being more intimate and easier to follow.

Necroing IS preferable to starting a new thread,
IN GENERAL.

No waste. But, necroing for some political purpose is
BS, as was pointed out. If it happens naturally - beautiful.

Otherwise, not so hot.

What's preferable is what the admin wants at a given time, based on what he has observed thus far. Currently, what I described is the preference.

To draw contrast, the Insomniac Games Forum which I go to often had moderators Locking threads with a link to whichever thread is better or came first (this happens a lot because people neglect to use the Search feature). If the thread is old it's sometimes allowed, but the forum is small compared to WP. I see that occasionally here, but not much. I've seen about 8 deviantART account threads in the Art section. (Sticky, maybe?)

Yes, definitely draw our attention to things that you think would help the site run more smoothly for the users.

I don't mind people necroing, I don't see a lot of threads or I'm on at a time when there's less activity, so sometimes it's interesting. I recognise names that no longer post here so I usually figure out it's an old thread.

Since I've never heard of necro trolling, I had a complete different idea of what it meant until you explained it.

Yes there is, actually. A necro troll is a person who brings up old posts simply to cause fights. A necromancer wants to save repeating a subject that has already been brought up before and simply recycles an old thread. A necro spammer is somebody who brings up old posts just to get their post count up.

so does that make necromancing against the rules... because i tend to do it at a lot of forums and i was thinking of searching for topics im interested in and posting...

Posting about necromancy......I dunno where we'd put that. I'm not sure it's against the rules.

How old does a post have to be before it is considered "necro"?
