Interesting... Alternative doesn't seem to have started using an avatar yet, so you can't have blocked it yet, but when I unblocked the only avatar I had blocked on this page, it was yours, UncleBeer. It's blocked again.

And yes, within reason, Alternative is allowed to use whatever avatar he likes. If he uses this one, or almost any other animated one, I will block it. All I say is that it becomes self defeating. A well chosen avatar serves to make a person more recognisable. A badly chosen one means they become fairly anonymous, either because the avatar gets blocked, or people skip past the distraction.

Oh! gismo! Brilliant:

(I want to increase the initial frame delay - to leave more time to confuse people! And probably stop the loop.)

Actually, I forgot to say that I really like your avatar - as a neat image. I can't have it visible, next to your posts, as then I wouldn't manage to read the posts, and I'll happily sacrifice the image in order to read what you are saying.

Thanks for agreeing with me. And I only haven't started using the avatar, because the uploader still refuses it. :(

Actually, I was speaking to UncleBeer, but the same comments may well apply.

I guess the limitation must be to 16,000 bytes, rather than 16,384 bytes, so:
Code:
gifsicle --crop  0,0+-8x-0 --colors 6 < playingwithfireng3.gif |gifsicle -O2 > try.gif

(cropping eight pixels off the right of the image, which doesn't seem to be any great losss)
gets you from the 16,345 byte file to the 15,955 byte file:

No problem...

but...

I have instantly blocked your avatar, as will many others.

Some will not be using software which can block your avatar, and they will just skip over your posts, without reading them.

I wouldn't skip over posts because of the avatar but then that's just me. Others obviously feel differently.

What a condescending attitude you have. This is nothing to do with "feel differently".

I find animated GIFs far too visually distracting. It has no bearing what they are. I just can't read the post beside them. Prior to AdBlock, I would sometimes drag the browser window sideways so that the avatar was off screen and hence not visible. Then I can't read who the poster is. With AdBlock, I just block the image, which means Alternative just shows with no avatar, for me.

I am not at all unique, on this board, with having this sort of visual sensitivity. The fact that it does not bother you is fine for you. I have sympathy for other users who are not so unchallenged.

If you look above, you will see that I am the one who modified the avatar so that Alternative can use it.

Lau,

You've only blocked the display of the avatar right? Not the actual post?

You'd still read them but just have no picture displaying....

Yes. AdBlock is nice. No adverts, for starters. Then any odd image that I can't handle, I just block.

I block almost all animated avatars. Unfortunately, I can't tell the difference between someone without an avatar and one I have blocked. I had to re-enable them to see if Pandora had a avatar. Sure enough, she does, with the falling snow. Pretty, but I can't comfortably read text beside it while it is distracting me.

All right - I didn't intend to be condescending but seeing as you've said I was, I will now truly be condescending. I was merely saying that some of us have issues with moving avatars and some don't. What is so condescending about that (btw, that is a rhetorical question).

I don't have much problems with animated avatars, it depends on how the animation is, if it is flashing like those "you are the 99th visitor" those are extremely annoying, I never had any and I never will choose to put an animated avatar because of the effect that has on some users, which could prevent them from reading my posts.

Yeah, I really don't like those ones that pop up and keep flashing and say "win a prize" or suchlike. They are nothing but a nuisance, particularly when they won't go away.
