Do ppl actually realise the mods aren't being paid to do what they do? Stop being so hard on them.. they're using their spare time to moderate with no real credit, no "official" training, no certification, and no prospects. They do it because they enjoy doing it. When it becomes a grind or an issue, there's no point in doing it anymore.
Moderators enjoy providing a service and generally helping ppl out. If they slip up and get shouted at for it by those ppl they like to help, they're more likely to actively neglect them.
If it's hard for the average IRC chat server with maybe 100 channels averaging maybe 4 or 5 official rooms, with maybe a dozen mods per room at best, with around 1000 users, in real time, operating over a potentially global scale, where the average comment is a sentence (and it is, DONE it), then it's got to be even harder to keep track of a forum with HUNDREDS of rooms/channels/whatever, with upwards of 18000 ppl, it amazes me that the mods here manage to keep a lid on as much as they do!
Lots of ppl think they want to be a mod. Everybody who does it is as enthusiastic as hell at first. But slowly and surely that enthusiasm is ground away by the overwhelming and depressing knowledge that there are billions of cretins worldwide who far outnumber those with an ounce of common sense.
Like the Spartans at Thermopolae, mods are the valiant few who can only ever hope to stem the tide of idiocy for a little while. Eventually, we're all overwhelmed by the endless waves of unadulterated pillockry; a task made ever harder when even the "regular" users, who aren't flooding, or spamming, or -insert internet naughtiness term here-, are bitching at you because you're not doing your voluntary job well enough!! !
