Quote:
A recent study has brought us closer to understanding “why some people are more likely to become obese than others”, The Daily Telegraph and other newspapers reported today.

The Telegraph also said that this could “pave the way for developing new treatments for obesity within a few years”.

The study follows the discovery this year that a variation in the sequence of a particular gene (the FTO gene) is associated with increased weight. The Guardian said that “half of the UK population carry a variant of FTO and are, on average, 1.6kg heavier than those who do not have it; 16% of the population carry two copies of the gene and are, on average, 3kg heavier”.

The researchers of the latest study have concluded that the FTO gene may be involved in regulating genes that are involved in metabolism, or alternatively, it might be involved in DNA repair and when this function breaks down (as might be the case when there are variants in the gene) this may lead to excess weight gain.

http://www.nhs.uk/news/2007/November/Pa ... tgene.aspx

Quote:
Carrying two copies of the FTO gene significantly increases the chances of becoming obese.

However, a study carried out among the US Amish community found an active lifestyle appeared to remove this risk.

A UK specialist said the results, reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine journal, would be interesting if repeated by larger studies.

The complex relationships between our genes and lifestyles, which can mean obesity for some people and not for others, has yet to be fully understood.

Several genetic variants have been linked to obesity, but none is wholly responsible for it.

The most common of these is FTO, with half of all people in Europe carrying either one or two copies of it.

It is not clear how it influences weight gain, although some scientists have suggested it may play a role in an individual's appetite.

The study from the University of Maryland supports other research which suggests that a person's level of exercise may help determine whether their genetic makeup will contribute to obesity.

I'm overweight, and when I put on this weight, I was literally buying new pants every week for a month - you can't tell me that it was my lifestyle that caused that, especially as my lifestyle hadn't changed during that time. Yes some of the pounds are my fault for not leading a better life after that, but there was nothing i could have done to put off the sudden gaining of those 40 lbs. My sudden weight gain has been attributed to pcos. However it could also be the out-of-whack hormones that led to the pcos causing the obesity as well as it being pcos.

I had a person who was once convinced that all my weight problems were the result of my lifestyle. It wasn't until I got really sick and started indepthly researching all of my health problems that he conceded this is weight it may not be possible to lose (aside from starving myself which isn't an option. I'd like to get back down to 132 but I'm not sure that it is even a realistic option, especially considering how high a fat diet I need to eat for the rest of my life, and how many activities I currently need to avoid

*but any way I wouldn't trust the telegraph any more than I'd trust the national enquirer. And i've seen amish women who are obese, but in general the men are very gaunt. I think that has more to do with the poor, little nutrition way they eat than their active lifestyle

I think that there's several components that make up a person's weight. If it's only a matter of diet, and exercise, then why don't people that are in prison serving long term sentences all about the same size? They eat roughly the same diet, and get roughly the same amount of exercise.

I also think that genetics play a big role in it. I'm by far not sedentary, but I don't go to the gym or anything like that, either, and I'm very thin. So is my father, who is a truck driver, so I know he isn't getting much exercise. I also have hypothyriodism, and even when I'm not taking my medication I don't seem to gain much weight. I just don't think it's fair to assume that everyone can be thin just by dieting, and hitting the gym.

Because they're different sizes going in. The amount of diet and exercise in prisons is probably sufficient to keep prisoners at a stable wieght.

Wouldn't it fluctuate after a long period of time, though? Say if there were a control group going into the prison at the same time serving life sentences wouldn't their weight go up/down(toward whatever a healthy BMI would be for that individual) after about 10-15 years? I'm just throwing out ideas here, but I think that would an interesting study.

Violet_Yoshi,

Are you refereing to the troll that originally came on as Anon443/381, using multiple nicks including physics_emot_eng, electronic_kitte, and APHEX, that we banned due to disruptive behavior?

That user is a known habitual troll of the channel, goes there SOLELY to disrupt it. I highly doubt that what they said about their weight is true anyway, and other then the PM attacks they were making on users, some choice lines (censored where needed, it's obvious) from them were:

23:36:14 <physics_emot_eng> I'm f#cking drunk.
23:37:38 <physics_emot_eng> The only thing that matters is h0w vioent/primal you are right.
23:38:38 <physics_emot_eng> Yeah, humans could pwn kitties.
23:38:48 <physics_emot_eng> Eat them like kitty tacoes or kitty soupl.
23:44:32 <physics_emot_eng> I had a few sh#tty college classes and now I think I have apsgerges.
23:44:35 <physics_emot_eng> What['s wrong with me. :P
he was shortly after that kicked by the channel bot for repeated cursing, unbanned by a channel op (who didn't know his history), and returned,
then he started wanting to get a reaction out of people (this is far from the first time we've seen this exact behavior pattern from a user on his network)
23:52:51 <Anon443> I'm drunk, should I drive to
23:52:55 <Anon443> Taco Ball? lol
00:03:58 <Anon443> CAPSLOCK MAKES EVERYTHING IMPORANT.
00:04:07 <Anon443> I AM THE GENIUS OF THE WORLD.
00:04:35 <Anon443> AM I ANON OR AM I A SUB-SUB ANON OF ANON.
00:04:38 <Anon443> I'[M CONFUSED.
00:04:53 <Anon443> I'M FALLING BEHIND ON MY VODKA DRINKING.
00:10:09 --- Anon443 is now known as electronic_kitte
00:10:12 <electronic_kitte> oh sh#t
00:12:08 <electronic_kitte> This is like 4chan
00:14:03 <electronic_kitte> I wish I had some heroin.
00:14:40 <electronic_kitte> I should do some heroin and coke maybe my mental s**t will go away. :P
00:15:12 <electronic_kitte> I wan to be a full-blwon junie
00:15:18 <electronic_kitte> I want to turin myu life
00:15:22 <electronic_kitte> That'd be great.
00:15:43 <electronic_kitte> I'\d love to be a lolser.
00:16:06 --- electronic_kitte is now known as APHEX
00:19:54 <APHEX> I sit on the bus and I feel like I could just climb to the tallest buliding I can spot and splatter my existence on the uncaring pavent.
00:21:03 <APHEX> If you can't contribue something revolutelitonatly to this world maybe you should blow your freaking brains out.
00:22:26 <APHEX> I mean suicide is beautiful in some respects.
00:22:38 <APHEX> Suisice inspires people.
00:22:58 <APHEX> I'd rather inspire someone then trudge along in some blue-c0llar piec eof sh#t existence.
00:24:25 <APHEX> I hate my f#cking parents.
00:24:36 <APHEX> I wish they would die.
00:26:50 <APHEX> I just want to push heroin theorugyh my veins.
00:27:02 <APHEX> HEROIN IS delicous right?

At this point, you (Violet_Yoshi) joined the channel, and lacking any context about him, or knowledge about user trends, started defending him and attacking other users, as he started again talking about wanting to drive drunk to tacobell. Many of the users in channel had seen him before (or if not him, a user on the same ISP, same region, same subnet, so as close as we can identify a user due to the forum not passing information to the channel for us operators to use), doing this and other routines purely to get attention, and getting more and more hostile to others as he goes on, and being quite disruptive. The final ban on him occurred after his twelfth time swearing in channel, having been warned TEN different times by operators to watch his language and stop attacking users. (had those operators known his history, he wouldn't have been allowed to be there in the first place as soon as he started making trouble!)

Not to mention you only saw what he said in channel (and PM if he PMed you), and missed all the oh-so-nice things he said to the channel ops in PM.

Now, please, when your told to stop attacking other users who are telling people (because they know the troll's history) to just ignore him, do so. You regularly assume you know everything going on in channel and attack people without understanding the events leading upto their actions, or having any historical perspective.

Your friendly neighborhood channel op, Bateau

Alright so if a troll comes into the room next time, telling someone with an eating disorder "Hey fatty you should loose some weight" or something to that respect, I should just ignore that, go on about my day. Even if that person may be triggered into relapsing into starving themselves.

Let alone people who are just plain sensitive about those things. Make it public when you are ridding the chat of trolls, perhaps that might help people understand something is being done hmm? Perhaps better than making the person who innocently tried to do what was right and moral by standing up to them, feel like they're being the agressor, the bully.

Another suggestion is making a public list of known trolls on wrongplanet. Sure it'll give those losers the pathetic notoriety they want to an extent, but then everyone will know who is being a troll and has a past history of abusing others, and who will be banned, and people who are actually intending to be cruel.

There have to be people other than me who feel that despite someone's history, there are certain things that should not be said in a chat room. That simply ignoring them and leaving them to hurt others isn't the answer. You mention to the room that you are going to ban the person that's fine, pming me and making me feel rotten for simply standing up for those victimized by these people, does nothing except lead one to presume there is no recourse in wrongplanet chat other than to ignore and let that person run the room into complete anarchy.

No, you should notify a channel operator so that they can deal with the problem, NONE of the channel operators received any feedback from users in this incident, it wasn't until my automated bot started noticing excessive swearing and contacted us that we were even aware there was a problem!

Oh, like:
23:47:21 <Bot_0> physics_emot_eng Please watch your language, you may review channel rules at http://wp.lavitt.net
23:47:53 --- Bot_0 sets ban on *!*@*cpe-76-188-211-60.neo.res.rr.com

yes, all of that was in channel, sorry if you missed it. And that doesn't include the numerous warnings we gave in PM (which we give in PM because we as ops are sick and tired of being attacked by users when we warn someone in channel!)

See comment #1 about contacting us so we can handle it. That way, no users get drawn into the middle of a problem, and we won't end up with never ending fights between users that just constantly escalate, as neither of you will stop!

We can't even get Alex to post the current rules on the site he keeps modifying the topic to point to, or on the "Chat" page here, he won't even link there, said it wasn't worth it and wouldn't help, same with giving us the ability to make a list of channel operators available for new users who don't know how to use Freenode's Chanserv). We also already have WAY more then enough trouble with users who don't have the experience and technical background the channel ops have assuming various new users who are join are trolls they know and attacking them for no reason. At least once a week we sadly usually lose a visitor because someone (usually a small group of specific someone's I'd be glad to see gone) attacks them because the nick they pick might coincidently be the same as a troll from the past, or their IP looks similar, or they spoke in a certain way that reminded them, etc. We don't need users attacking innocent people, we are a support channel and need to do the best we can for as many as we can.

Agreed, like constantly swearing, telling people to use drugs, attacking other users, talking about how you want to rape your neighbor's daughter (at least no one disagreed about banning that guy!) etc. When someone is saying something they shouldn't, please get a channel op (see comment #1, again!)

Umm, who PMed you? I know I sure didn't, I was sound asleep at the time. Was it a channel operator? if so who? And please, try to understand the whole situation before you make any judgments. As to what actions to take, once again, contact a channel operator (see comment #1!! !)

You also have to consider food, the main factor in being overweight.

Whether people can help it or not, it still shouldn't be discriminated against.

I had to find motivation to exercise, as the only places of interest within a half-hour round trip walk are shops (more specifically, a service station, or a gas station to Americans, and a corner shop), and that would only tempt me to buy something to eat or drink.

Thus, it was only recently that I have been able to not only put an exercise bike in the house to good use, but do so consistently and regularly. I hit upon the idea of watching DVDs while doing 25 minute sessions (one per day) on the bike, at about 30 kph. Special features on DVDs are often the best (being about the right length of time), particularly Doctor Who and James Bond DVDs. Today, I watched The Making of the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Tomorrow, I will probably watch either Osiran Gothic, or Serial Thrillers, documentaries on the Doctor Who DVD Pyramids of Mars.

There are four main factors that affect weight: genetics (and with that, metabolism), psychology, food consumption, and exercise. None of those factors is there to be made fun of.

QFT. Especially the metabolism part. It plays a major role in diet. It's why some people struggle with diets - they have poor metabolism, a fact exacerbated by those who skip breakfast.

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day for a very good reason - it gives your metabolism a kick start and provides you with the day's energy needs.

In all cases, however, you only get out what you put in, and if you consume a large amount of carbohydrates, you are going to need to burn that energy or it's going to settle on you as your body stores it as fat for later.

regardless of whether or not it's genetic, I think we can all agree that attacking someone (due to size or any other trait) is not allowed on WP.

Not necessarily. If calories in=calories used then weight will remain stable at whatever it is. If prison conditions were such that prisoners were losing weight, that would be considered a human rights issue because the prisoners aren't being fed enough to maintain their weight. And of course the prison doesn't want to spend any more than is necessary on feeding prisoners, so they aren't likely to gain weight either.

You can exercise all you want, and still be fat, that is reality. That is genetics. Exercise has to be about the joy of moving around, not the goal being thinness.

I feel like all this talk about genetics really dehumanizes us. I mean, I had a sub-19 BMI when I was a cross-country runner through sheer force of will.

And it sucked.
