Cross-posting, as I understand it, would be the replication of threads in multiple forums, or duplication of material (generally larger) within multiple threads without original content. Intellectual spam, but spam nonetheless.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossposting

That makes it slightly clearer than mud.

At the end of the day, the offence is mainly summed up in the phase used there, that: "it multiplies traffic without adding any new content".

=============

The format on this site is single threaded, linear threads. Nice and simple.

Within a thread, quoting other contributors to that thread is fine. (Although one should try to limit the quote to the particular parts that you are addressing, rather than quoting the whole thing, and just adding "I (dis)agree.")

If you want to refer to something that was said in another thread, link to that post. Cut&pasting text is at minimum inconvenient, as other readers are not able to see the context of the bit you have copied.

If you really feel that you have to cut&paste from another thread, always ALSO give a link to where the original can be seen. A link. Not a vague "(s)he said this on that thread about chickens". Bear in mind that this thread is thread number 85,104 on WP.

I suppose what we are saying here is that quoting someone out of context is not good netiquette (or etiquette).

That sounds like "I'm a mod, I can do what I want, and to hell with everyone else". It smacks of arrogance. Argument is an essential part of getting to a position where all parties agree, and can then move forward from common ground. Why not just discuss the very reasonable points put to you, instead of appearing to treat us all with contempt?

Note that I'm not personally attacking you, if you feel like playing that card. I'm just pointing out how you come across.

I don't feel you're attacking me at all.

I realize that I come off as arrogant online. I guess everybody gets cut slack for being autistic except me. :)

"I'm a mod, I can do what I want, and to hell with everyone else".

It's true I'm a mod. It's not true that I can do whatever I want. I certainly don't think, "to hell with everyone else." When I say I only need to state my position, I mean I have no need to convince anyone that I'm right or they're wrong. I'm okay if people don't agree with me. I have my opinion, other people have their's, and that's okay. I personally think that truth is a pretty illusory and elusive thing. I think that most of what most people hold as truth is actually opinion. I realize that many people will not share this point of view. I imagine they will make some very good arguments to the contrary. I'll probably still believe what I believe. I'll definitely still be okay.

so that was pretty much what I was saying about cross posting. Thanks for letting us realize, MrMark, that we don't always have to have the PREDOMINANT opinion, just an opinion.

I myself, am continually stunned when something I write seems so obvious in its truth and beauty that it doesn't just stop a thread cold with awe struck members wandering away murmering to themselves about my profundity. Ah well.

I just found out that signing my moniker to the end of every post is not cpnsidered a signature. I could have told people that. . .it's not in longhand!
