I know that someone did come up with an alternative colour scheme, some while ago, but I never had occasion to try it out (this default scheme has always suited me).
If anyone can track that down, I'd see about putting in somewhere in the FAQ.

Any browser should be capable of handling local CSS overrides. I know it's simple in Firefox (and SeaMonkey, which is what I use most of the time). Some time back, I toyed with this, as an idea, but only to verify that it was easy to do. I didn't go into it in any detail. Changing the background colours is really very trivial.

As I use Web Developer as an add-on, I can just click "CSS"/"Disable Styles/"All Styles" (which has a shortcut of Ctrl/Shift/S) - to toggle all colours off (and everything else, for the matter). It ends up essentially black on a white (well, white, if I disable page colours, too) background.

Anyway, I'd be happy to tinker with some of this, and put the results in the FAQ, if there were some specific suggestions. Just don't ask me how to do it with proprietary browsers. (grin)

PS. I keep forgetting.... as it happens, I have my Firefox set up to swap over the blue and green posts... for no particular reason, other than to show I could do it. In my profile, sub-directory "chrome", I have got the file "UserContent.css":

I.e. if you want different background, just put that file there, and pick the colours you want. I.e. you could have:
