It's too bad. I used to be a regular poster here, but the slowness of the site is one of the reasons I've been staying away lately. I'm not going to launch any complaints against anyone; I'm just saying it's a shame because this site does have its unique niche among other similar sites.

If I could, maybe I'd support it financially, but I have to reserve my money for things like food and bus fare.

Is there anything people can do to help out if they have time and / or skills to contribute, but not money?

Wrong planet is usually really fast. But it does go through it's slow patches when tons of people post at once, just like any forum.

I pretty much second the views of 'release the bats' as posted above.

In addition I'd add that the periodic slowness of the site seems to be reflected not only by the notable absence of regular posts by several of the more provocotive members, but also by by a lack of the spontaneous responses and hence a deterioration in the quality of what canusually be cotentiously debated and informative threads.

The Google ad revenue have dropped considerably in the last year and a half, along with the rest of the economy. People use ad blockers and that cuts down more on the potential revenue. Poor use of. A professional webhost would be cheaper and faster offer better support. Instead asking for more and more expensive sever equipment, an exercise in chancing the tail. Remember the last people donated a load of money for an upgrade? Did it make a difference?

That is a choice. The archaic software riddled with bugs and security holes is a choice.

it wasn't for an upgrade, it was for up keep.

it takes $300. a month to make it run just the way it is. it is run by a full time student in his senior year of college with all the papers due and senior projects and what have you that goes on in that year. If it were run by others on this forum, I am certain it would be a vastly different place, but it isn't.

Like I said a good web host would decrease the overheads. It shouldn't cost $300, something is wrong there.

Even major sites, sometimes outsource to good web hosts. There is nothing wrong with doing it, Alex doesn't need rackspace quality, with dedicated support. In fact he doesn’t need dedicated at all.

I am sorry but I think it is wrong to ask for money in these circumstances, not unless he willing to explain his books.

This was a problem a couple of years ago. It has nothing to do with his finals.

That is perturbing; especially as I donated 50$ just a month ago.

What do you think it should cost to run this site then?

Even if it had 20,000 uniques a month you could easily do that for $300. Bandwith and hosting get cheaper and cheaper each year. This site doesn't have development cost because there is no development on it.

The current sevice is not worth $300 a month that is for sure. I recon they could cut cost in half at least.
