No, wait....

It's excellent to know we're good for something!

What an excellent example of why it's so ridiculous to apply the filter to this word.

I'm of the school that believes that the "r-word" is every bit as bad as the "n-word", but only in certain contexts. There's a big difference between saying something is "so rihtahrded" and saying that a substance "rihtahrds growth".

The r-word issue is one that should be handled by mods, not a filter.

I agree. Of course, it is not exceptionally difficult to circumvent the swear filter, though I have been advised that demonstrating how to do so is not permitted. Let me note that I regard the use of the "r-word" (I wish I could use it properly without risking a ban for swearfilter-circumventing) as a generic pejorative to be in poor taste, but inserting code into a forum to render it as "good guy" is just silly. And I'll never be able to use or read the word "excellent" on here again without a moment of mental confusion. Way to create unnecessary ambiguity, mods.

Well, that explains why when I followed the link from the email notification for this thread, I was sent to a thread titled "Orwell being naughty" with an error message stating that it didn't exist.

I wonder if the mods were aware that their temporary title for a thread would show up like that.

Of course it does not exist, because Orwell would never be naughty. In fact, Orwell has never been naughty, and reports to the contrary are just lies spread by doubleplusungoodthinkful thought criminals.

It may have just been the link to that specific post. Which is gone now. My post on the previous page has also been edited.

*Quatermass turns into a hideous chimera of O'Brien and Don Burgess*

Wrong answer. :P

*Buzzer sounds, and Orwell is stretched on a rack ala Winston Smith*

I know that you're saying 'excellent', but are really using a synonym for 'to hold back'.

*Leaving Orwell on the rack, Quatermass goes to camera, switching out the Don Burgess part of his chimeric nature for a generic televangelist part.*

But seriously, I do think that using that word, provided it is in the right context, may be a necessity on this forum. That's why I'm calling for donations. Call 1800-AVON CALLING* and send your donations today.

*Yes, I am being facetious about the hotline, as well as doing a pun based on my avatar.

Have come across this several times before already in own posts.
As someone who is on the 'MR' spectrum [mild, and have MLD to use as an alt diagnosis],am find it a bit insulting that those of us who are fine with using MR/R on ourselves and no one else are censored as well,it's also not fair reinforcing that the word is bad by filtering it out, when many with, and without MR want to 'reclaim' the word,in the same way people have done with 'spaz','spastic','crip' and 'cripple' already.

I think that the problem is, that some people (I can't say who) are afraid to, or afraid to allow us to, handle reality _as_it_is_.

They think that they can make problems disappear, by not saying the "word" for it. You constantly have to call things something else, every time something is considered bad or unclean.

It is a game of hide-and-seek.

I can only quote Jack Nicholson: "You can´t handle the truth!"

Hmmm...

The technical term for a parachute is an "aerodynamic retardation device."

exactly! I don't think that anyone is doing mentally ret*d people a favour by making people believe that "ret*d" is an insult.

my first language is not English and I would never think that "rheethardid" is an insult. "rheethard" is a different story, but still, it shouldn't be censored.

and wtf is "good guy" filtering out?

This is worse than George Orwell's newspeak! I use the word excellent quite a bit. The problem now is everyone has to double think posts where the word is used in case the poster is being facetious and really implying the ret* word :-(

Whoever put that particular word transposition filter together did an excellent job!
