And then, without any warning, a calm settled over the scene. The curtains stilled, the cat froze, staring out at the darkness, silence filling the space and holding everything in place: a sudden still life of early evening.

Then the cat went back to licking her paw, eyes closed in focused contentment.

I think we should have three.

Yes. Three is a good number.

It's bigger than two.

It's not as annoying as four.

Three.

All in agreement?

That's a question. It smells of being a question. I fear it.

I don't really like three... bad things come in threes 8O

All right so now that we've cleared *that* up, I would like to approach the bench.

Hm. Three. No, it's not four. Four. I don't like two. It's too...abrupt.

Three--it's soft, but kind of sneaky. Wet. Four. Foooouuuuurrrrr. Kind of furry. Clean. Three tastes a little like ammonia--like rotten chicken, and lemon.

Five. Hm. Fiiiivvve. Takes a little work. But a sense of accomplishment.

Five is it, then.
