What servers is it running on anyway?

The site does not seem slower to me this week than ever... I am on a low speed connection. It never takes more than a couple of seconds to load each page though.

That's non-sense.

'Scuse me?

Pages surely *did* load faster after I had installed SilverLight, but that might not have been because I had just installed SilverLight! In fact, I now suspect my occasional cleaning of temp files and rebooting is what makes the difference there. I used to make my 98se really fly, relatively speaking, but I do not know how to accomplish the same in XP.

Then, it is an absolute fact that my ISP *does* get slow at certain times when the traffic on my ISP is high. Just come look over my shoulder on just about any holiday that happens to fall on any day of the usual work week.

Any suggestions for making XP more efficient online? My pages here often load as fast as yours, but then things begin bogging down after a while.

Yes. Reduce the size of the cache in your browser. In their infinite wisdom, Microsoft default the cached data to a percentage of your C "drive". This is insanely large. I set my cache to 50 megabytes (in Firefox, that's Edit/Preferences/Advanced/Network).

XP itself has no significant impact on online efficiency. You will always be limited by either your connection speed or the speed of the server sending you pages. The time spent rendering pages in your browser will be minimal, by comparison.

My guess is it's on a shared server from how slow the pages load. Just getting a dedicated server would probably make a lot of difference, Also there is a lot of redundant html on each page, they have mixed HTML and XHTML markups, and big sections are commented out and sucking up processor cycles and bandwidth for no reason.

there are tons of sites and forums, some with terrabytes of information, images and the like that are free that don't have this problem. I go to a lot of forums and none of them are this slow.

Again, where's the money going? There are never any upgrades, no new images for icons like "you posted here" and no men-only forum.

I caught that tip when Merle thanked you for it, and now I thank you! I have also set "Check for newer versions of stored pages" to "Never", and I have set "Keep history" to zero days.

It wouldn't cost any money to upgrade this software (phpbb) as its free, the icons could be done for free if you know where to ask, again for free, Hosting can be costly especially on a dedicated server, and my guess is the costs would not cover the hosting/domain

I'm not sure that either of those will do you much good.

The former only requires a tiny transaction in order to verify whether a page needs re-fetching from the server. It is not a huge delay, by comparison with the time the server takes to construct the page and transmit it to you.

The latter is just a locally maintained list of pages you have visited. It has no effect on the time of accessing pages themselves. It can be useful if you want the security of not allowing people to see where you've been.

maybe 72 hours a week? Sounds about right. And that is just me, the other mods are on in their time zones, too. Spam never sleeps

And yet you still manage to patiently point out my silliness when I send you a frantic PM all terrified that Alex will hate me for not being completely sure about which parts of the hour-long audio interview I typed up were relevant.. You are truly amazing.

I suspected that ...!
