I also use FlashBlock (it's a plug-in for Firefox). It basically replaces all Flash animations (most of the more annoying ads use Flash) with a clickable "play" button so that you can view them if you want to. Unfortunately I don't know of any good ad filtering software for mobile devices, as there are some sites that almost completely unusable because of the volume of ads.

I've learned to tune out most web ads and rarely click on them since they tend to contain tracking cookies and never actually live up to the "promise".

Right-click on them and choose AdBlock Plus: Block Image... .

Then under Look for pattern select the longest one and click Add filter .

I want to give you all a big thank you---it is now working. What a relief.

I had to install the ad-blocker program last year because there was an ad on this site that was slowing down my whole computer to a crawl whenever it came up. Good riddance!

without adblock i would never be able to spend any time on the internet. it isn't just movement and such, but content and the concept of advertising being so ubiquitous that makes me crazy. i cannot tolerate being pummeled with requests to be manipulated into spending my money on things i don't really need or want. i feel assaulted. i hate getting junk mail and spam, even if it goes to its own folder without any help from me. i am just furious that i can't be left alone by it. i used to change my email address all the time when i started getting spam, and respond with irritation anytime anyone sent me a forwarded email .. i'm convinced this is how spammers get email addresses; they devise some cute email with twenty pictures of kittens, or a chain letter email (don't get me started on chain letters .. ) or something that will trigger people's hysteria, that they'd best forward it to everyone in their address book or some dire event will take place. no one ever looks this stuff up to determine its validity; they simply comply. ten forwards later, since rarely does anyone think to protect anyone's privacy by deleting the addresses or sending to oneself and BCCing everyone else, there is an email with hundreds of email addresses on it. sooner or later, it falls into the hands of a spammer.

i used to block all avatars that annoyed me too .. anything that moves or is too high contrast. it interfered with my ability to read people's posts. i can't do that now with the adblock on chrome. i will probably go back to firefox.

Hmmm... I'm using Firefox, successfully installed adblock plus, and followed the above advice 3 times now - the 3 ads immediately disappeared, but I keep getting other ads. And some of them do not show "AdBlock Plus: Block Image" when I right click... instead they say something about Global Settings and Adobe Flash Player...

Help please?

You could try (from Firefox)

Tools > Adblock Plus preferences

Then from the menu in the new window:

Filters > Add Filter Subscription

then select Easy List (or any other English list) and click Add Filter

That should block most known ads, though there could be some types it won't touch. Dunno how to zap those, if disabling Flash doesn't do it.

Use Adblock Plus! It helps block the ads on Wrongplanet and Facebook!

When I'm at work, I tend to read WP on my lunch-hour and we're not allowed to use anything other than IE. And if there is an ad-blocker for that, we'd not be allowed to install it.

The adds do drive me nuts - even if you could just gtet them to stay still or something - I can mentally block out "junk" at the side, but things jumping and moving and spinning drive me slightly crazy.

Those ads are SO ANNOYING - especially the one with the kid jumping UP and DOWN on the side of the screen! The SPITTING PILL one is kinda' FUNNY, but STILL annoying! But I suppose the ONLY thing I can do is ignore it.

I just don't see why we can't get rid of the advertisements for the members. I know plenty of forums and websites, the moment you register and log in and become a member, you don't have to deal with the ads.

IE8 has a built-in ad blocker! It is not called ad blocker because if it were so obvious dozens of advertizers would sue Microsoft. Lawyers tend to follow the money.

Blocker is called 'InPrivate Filtering'. Turn it on!

In the steps above, under Look for pattern the longer ones are more specific and block fewer images. The longest one would block one image, the second-longest one would block more images, the third longest one would block even more.

One of them, though, will block all images from this site, so I would select the longest one, and if that doesn't try the steps above again and select progressively shorter ones.

As for Flash ads, you can install an extension called FlashBlock that will prevent all Flash videos from playing unless you click on placeholders that will appear in their place. You can left-click on the placeholder to play the movie once, or right-click on the movie and allow all Flash content from a particular site.

I hate the ads as well so I minimize the browser window so that the box is big enough to read the text only and I don't see the ads.
