It's rather difficult to tell in text based communication. I wish there were a standardized punctuation system to indicate tone, emotions, and generally whether somebody is attempting to be facetious, sarcastic, serious, or whatnot.

I was asking lightheartedly.

I don't think the heinous crimes of online sockpuppetry and RL domestic violence can really be compared to one another either.

Obviously NOBODY ELSE has noticed that murphycop is only 2 months old on WP, yet seems to know a lot about things that happened here 12-18 months ago. I was implying with jest that AceOfSpades may be their original account.

But what's the point in even trying to bring attention to sockpuppets and crap. I alerted the mods to NathanA and got immediately dismissed didn't I? (and no I'm not trying to make a point of NathanA, I'm simply using it as an example. The point I'm trying to make is that nobody here seems to trust my instinct when I notice something amiss with "new" members)

Sort of like Umbongo who seemed keen upon replying to me and also seemed to know things happening all the way back in 2007, or at least calling the former member Sopho a "WP Martyr of 2007" which is rather bizarre.

Actually, I think there ought to be a term for when people use the photographs of other members as their own avatars. The term "sockpuppet" refers to a person creating a duplicate account for themselves, however I think there ought to be the term "puppet" for when people seek to intentionally mimic other users. NathanA is not an account of mine whatsoever, but it was a puppet account in an attempt by the I^2 group to have what would appear to be me to interact with in their gay thread. At that point the I^2 group was annoyed that I wasn't responding to their posts, so they created a puppet of me using one of my photographs.

It's been noticed. But those sorts of hands are usually best not played in public, for a variety reasons; I have told the current mods my suspicions on it. Remember that action requires proof, not just suspicion, and that can take a while for a mod team to gather.

When I was a mod many members would send me pm's with their suspicions and some had incredible abilities to spot the re-incarnations. I always took it seriously, and was extremely grateful for the extra eyes and instincts.

Ah. I thought a sock puppet was someone acting in cahoots with a trolling "ring leader" of some sort.

From where I sat at that time, it seemed more like they were simply "planning an attack" and trying to plant "troops" ahead of time ... but then they never got a chance to play because of your own decision to just be silent for a while at the same time I essentially called them out.
