@Surfman

While I don't start multiple threads. I don't think they are too bad and not too many people do it. Its the cross-posting, which is already against the rules that needs to stop. We don't need three South Park threads on multiple forums--maybe just one will do.

"Maybe it could be just me.... sorry to offend multiple thread starters and their fan boys. My apologies"

I think the multi-thread start fanboys will be happy to accept your most sincere apology. :)

"Aspies are blurters who need to learn to STFU FACT"

Allow me to blurt out that your poetic style posts are most annoying, or perhaps I should start a new thread about it. Apologies in advance if you are offended. Now I will STFU. :)

But I've had compliments 8)

Dont you like poetry?
I can stop
I dont mind
There may be something else I do
That you find?

Shall I invest you
With my mind?

I can stop this sillyness
But then we would have no
Ties that bind

At first I thought it meant every user only has to post one post per day. But one thread per day....yeah I suppose that isn't that bad, since I sometimes do one or none a day, most is two.

And if I see any BS like this posted up, I will go insane! I know we're all smart enough to know this is more than BS.

Something that may work (and be fairly easy to implement) is preventing new members from posting until they have been a member for a week, and made at least 10 posts.

This would encourage members to get to know the forums before starting threads. It would also reduce the number of threads where the starter posts a question and is never seen again.

----

A more complex system (which would require more work for the moderators) would be to have the first 5 threads started by a member pre-approved, with threads failing to meet basic requirements deleted. Members failing to meet the requirements would be added to the pre-approval list.

Some of the basic requirements could be:
-Posted in the correct forum for the topic
-Given a title that identifies the topic of the post
-Does not duplicate a thread already active (top 20 posts) in the forum

I think the thread titles are important as it makes it easy to decide which threads to read/follow. If a title is too general, or an open ended question then it is difficult tell what is in the thread (even if you have read it before). Some examples of inappropriate thread titles currently active are:
-Parents are....
-Why Now?
-Aspergers?
-Dating [found on Love and Dating]
-Work [found on Work and Finding a Job]

This may sound draconian, but if a member cannot be bothered to give their thread an appropriate title, why should others bother to investigate to find out if it is something they want to read.

Good point. On this matter though, people can choose for themselves to look at the thread or skip it because it invites skipping.

What bugs me about this is when a new member posts the same OP in several different forums because they want to be sure that someone will respond. A recent cluster of threads on oxytocin comes to mind.

However, I've resolved to simply keep a list of members to ignore. So when I see that when a thread is started by a person on my list, I'll try to ignore the entire thread. If I see the same person has posted in a thread I've been following, I'll try to not reply directly to any of that person's posts.

The most effective tool for ignoring spammers, trolls, and attention whores lies between a person's ears.

Back on the forum I am usually on, someone did that.... it took at least 1.5 hours to get rid of the extra posts of the samething.

Bumping-up discussion thread.

More often than not, it's best to respond (and connect) to an existing discussion thread.

Better yet, continuity in discussions can be maintained by quoting a previous response in a discussion thread!

Great! :D I love blind and arbitrary limits on what people can do, especially when they don’t interfere with my habits and interests. It’s like that venerable adage,

So thread starting considered harmful? Yay! My only objection is that one a day per user is way, way too soft. Why not one a year? Combine this with a strict policy of considering a thread officially dead after a week of inactivity and zero tolerance of necroposting. Soon the whole site would be dead, and this would be the greatest thing ever, since it’d cure us once and for all of the vice of starting threads on Wrong Planet.

I think it could be useful for stopping spam that fills the whole page with the same exact posts but I think that would be better dealt with by having a much lesser time frame for new posts like one per 5 minutes or something. If you can post a 2nd one in less than 5 minutes, chances are that it was not much of a post anyways.

I have no proper conception of time and if you limit new thread starts, you'll intimidate me and silence me.

Wait a minute. You are annoyed by autistic behaviour? At WrongPlanet, are we not free to speak openly without fear? To be the really real me? And does this website undertake not to request that people with autism should just shut up?

No. No. No. Sometimes posts can be pesky but have we not learned to take the gentle way around and be tolerant of each other?

You're sure they're trolls? Then just skip it.

Gosh, that was upsetting. Maybe I'll just stay here and post all night.
