What happened to phpbb user hide extension? Until this thread I had forgotten entirely I even had it installed (in both Firefox and Google Chrome). I suppose I forgot because it doesn't seem to work anymore. There is no [X] next to any usernames anymore.

In any event, it may be telling that I've forgotten about it. It is, after all, a whole lot simpler to just not read posts from users who tend to bring out the worst in me.

Though I admit that can be difficult sometimes.

So I'm requesting my account be locked, banned or whatever. It's just time. Until then, well, I dunno...

Maybe I should look at the code. Alex has been messing about with some of the names/ids - and it may not be working as intended. I haven't used it myself for some time. I host it at: phpbbuserhide.user.js
(Note: this is not quite where the FAQ link points at. I seem to be going through a little hiccup with the way DynDNS and 1&1 redirect my "bergbland.info" domain.)

Every forum I've been a moderator on has had a rule that moderators do not get to maintain ignore lists.

If it stops them from getting themselves banned over a flame war, I think it is beneficial. ;)
To a point - but it's not as beneficial as dealing with a problem like adults.

Sometimes dealing with a problem like adults is a matter of mutual avoidance.

Indeed - better that than a ban if they absolutely cannot and will not be able to tolerate each other.

Banning moderators from having ignore lists is the only way this could really work. I wonder if you could remove those privileges for a specific class of member (i.e. moderators) in the forum settings?

Exactly. Sometimes continued communication is worse than silence.

I know that the fora I've moderated that had this rule relied on the honor system - but those fora used vBulletin. On each occasion, I was sad to burn down my ignore lists - but they needed to be purged at any rate.

It doesn't need to be made a rule, it is blindingly obvious that no moderator should have an ignore list anyway. It would be impossible to moderate properly if moderators couldn't see posts by certain members - as tempting as it might be! :P

^^ And by the same token, in the current version of phpBB - members can't ignore moderators (if the ignore function was enabled at all).

It is blindingly obvious to you and I, but someone always asks.

Actually, I prefer it if you keep a separate account. I.e. you use your normal account when you merely wish to participate in the forum, and switch to another account (that is clearly still you) when moderating/administrating.

It means that you are able to maintain the ignore list in your standard account. More importantly, you can't "accidentally" do things that a normal member can't do. Also, in some instances, the board behaves differently (e.g. for post deletion), for a normal member, versus one with privileges, when it can help to be able to see what a member is having problems with.

The other account (which should still clearly be you) doesn't keep ignore lists.

The two accounts also reflect how much of your time/energy is spent actively moderating. (Although the 1,752 of my posts that I can no longer access give that sort of hint.)

Once you get sacked as a moderator, the owner just blocks the extra account.

I've seen that idea play out and it actually didn't work. I don't remember all the reasons it failed, so I can't really present a convincing argument here, unfortunately.
