I don't see the point of hidden mods. Any member is able to bring a dodgy post to the attention of Alex or the Mods, what benefit comes from secrecy?

A member of the board bringing a dodgy post to the attention of Alex or the very few mods is of little benefit if none of those are actually around at the time and have gone to bed or are otherwise engaged. More mods would ensure that there is usually someone here to deal with offensive posts and potentially explosive situations...What atomica did is nowt compared to what a whole group could do, and quite simply the forum wouldn't have a leg to stand on if a whole group decided to join one night and spam up the forums...as most likely, no one with mod capabilities would be here. A mod doesn't just inform Alex what is happening, they tend to have abilities to delete posts and close threads afterall.

I still don't see what the benefit is of having secret Mods. Of course I have absolutely no quibble with spammers/trolls being dealt with quickly. However, I have seen, for example, MrMark explain why he has taken a particular course of action. I appreciate this and feel it is of benefit to the site and the members. I have a fundamental problem with decisions carried out without explanation, especially involving issues that are not as clear cut as that of the obvious trolls
. No, a forum is not a democracy, but still, I would always value transparency above secrecy. If a member was banned by a 'secret mod' who didn't explain his or her actions, I would be very uncomfortable about it. There should be fairness in Moderation, and it should be open and above board. That is my opinion, anyway.

Yes we do,

we got hit by two trolls last night and no one could deal with them.

We need more mods so there's always at least a good chance one is on.

At least two more but three would be better.

I'd suggest the users Quatermass, Awesomelyglorious and Starbuline. Each is on a good bit of the day and is a well-known and liked member.

I dunno about being well-liked. And I feel that I would abuse the power of a mod. Gnothe seauton. And I do, all too well.

heh, If it's anything like modding the forums I have worked on you will be far too bogged down with trying to check every post and reply to every PM to even think about abusing power!

There should be a list of moderators and what they moderate so members can contact them. Every large busy forum should have that.
