Overmoderation?

Yay! I'm glad someone has that. There are other sections that don't show on the moderator list as well though. Do you have power in them too? Someone should.

I don't recall GalileoAce getting "burned out". He just got banned with no explanation.

I never got "burned out". I resent that blatant accusation! I was removed as moderator, and then banned as a member, for reasons that still have not been told to me.
I don't mind you lying to me, I don't mind you lying to yourself, but please don't lie to WrongPlanet membership.

As I recall, Moderators had more to do than just "deleting spam" we had to control 'brush-fires' when members had disagreements that disrupted the forums, we had to monitor offensive language, offensive posts, and inappropriate content. A bit more than "spam".

Yeah, but we're in the odd position of wanting to do that, but not secure in our existence if we do.

I keep coming across people with the moderator title as I go through older pages, but I have not seen any of them posting since I joined so am assuming they left.

Many, if not all, were banned at one stage. Alex had banned the entire moderating team. As you can see I can access the site now, I assume many of them can too, but choose not to. There are plenty of other ASD community forums out there.

There are many of us who left during a very rancorous period, a time when almost every single moderator got banned. It was a dark period, and I am happy that things have become more polite around here. However, you new members/moderators should heed Galileo Ace's comments. It's probably better to undermoderate than overmoderate at this point. (Just basing that thought on Alex's post about being a firefighter rather than a policeman).

I'm trying. I really am. It's just very difficult to make the decision not to remove something which is blatantly offensive, or likely to start a flame war. My only hope is that I don't get banned for using overactive judgement. I don't really care if I'm a mod or not - it's neither something that I asked for, nor deserved in any way, after all.

My personal reaction to a post which could start a flame war or such thing, if I were a mod, would be to give a warning about it below about deletion. Give 'em time to edit it, but if they don't care (either by leaving it as is or just by their posting history) I'd burninate it or give a disclaimer below, like "This post was obviously written in rage, and if any users wish to get upset over it, they do so at their own risk.

From there, it's business as usual. (MODERATED!!)

That's very close to where my own feelings would drive me. But it does seem in conflict with what we are expected to be doing. Honestly, I think that this large mass of mods is here almost exclusively to kill the potential of spamming - and not the normal kind which is prevelant throughout this site, but rather the attacks like those which ATOMIKA and such perpatrated. If it were made absolutely clear that that is all that we are to do - ignore pornographic and inflamatory posts - well, that would be easy enough. But some vagueness has been left in - perhaps intentionally, and it is here that I wonder. But, the best rule seems to be: if at all in doubt, do nothing. Now, if only I can follow that.

I am sure we will be told if we are doing anything wrong.
On all the forums I have been a member of, the moderator was there to keep order and to deal with inappropriate things being posted, things being posted in the wrong area, keeping things moving as in starting new topics if they ran dry and answering any problems members had, as well as dealing with trolls, of course. It was a carefully defined job with a carefully defined list of dos and donts.

It should be noted that whilst I was a moderator there were several... "unstable" members on WrongPlanet who were constantly bickering with each other. It wasn't fun for moderators or members. I assume that most of them has since moved onto other sites that would cater to their... "unique" personalities.

Good luck to the Mods, I know it's tough sometimes because there are times when you're dammed if you do and dammed if you don't - in terms of taking action.
