Fine. Seeing as it doesn't seem likely to cause harm to continue discussing ducks,
I guess it is okay. Plus, I've managed to pull everyone's ire to myself, so no
one will end up getting hurt by flaming.

As to our mandate, we each seem to have different views. There's a reason for this:
Alex's instructions to us seem, at least to me, to be pretty vague. We tried to hash out
what we should (and shouldn't) do, but have some disagreements. So, while killing spam
is definitely our primary purpose, deleting offensive material, as well as preventing flaming
are also things which Alex has suggested that we handle, within limits (which are pretty undefined).

Guidelines can be troublesome. They require VERY careful
consideration. Otherwise, they can be used as a defense
against charges of moderator abuse. I think that it makes
a lot of sense for us to follow the guidelines which he has
loosely provided, to the best of our ability.

This is a commercial site. Alex has apparently been stung by
moderator actions, in the past. Otherwise, I would agree. There
are plenty of democratic communities, which are apparently lacking
something which this 'dictatorial' site has. Honestly, there is quite a
good deal of freedom here, though there are places which are more
free. There are also places where a lot of what goes on here would
simply not be tolerated. I would say that the current set-up is working
pretty well, with or without your respect.

I prefer things the way they are now. I've seen so-called democracy at other internet places, and it seems when people get elected they take that as some kind of mandate to do what they want. It also perpetuates the system of discrimination many with AS have to suffer IRL, in that the popular people get to dictate to everyone else. Furthermore, there's no guarantee you're getting real democracy; stating something is democratic is often just a ploy to give respectability to an arrangement that is profoundly corrupt.

It seems that he's made a few statements which
give us some guidance. I'm fairly happy with
them, though at first, it seemed far too sparse.
Mainly, we get our feet wet, and see what pisses
people off. In this case, however, I don't see
that there was any reasonable way to avoid a
confrontation.

it lives at +1500m in the Andes and can swim in white water. Have a look at its tail feathers. It is actually evolutionary older than ducks (Tadorninae)

Its closest relative is though to be the blue duck of new zeland

Not very attractive but we used to have a pair of these living in our garden when I was a teen... a mating pair left there by the previous owner as our garden had a small lake. They would come to our patio window and peck on it when we were sat there and follow us all the way along the house until they got fed. Muscovy ducks. Mate for life, apparently. When one died, the other soon followed.
