I'm talking about once prolific and well liked members who finally gave up.
Did they give up, or
grow up?

I suppose there are some who feel that chronic daily server glitches and outages that lasted hours and went of for months, had no negative impact, but I don't see it that way.
Then, as I have suggested before, build your own website.
The "unless you can do better, don't complain" argument is bogus. Unless you yourself have applied such to anything you've ever been unhappy about. Like since you're unhappy about the president of the US, then go become president. Or go start your own county.

Then we can visit it and bag on you about how terrible it is, and how inept you are at keeping it running.
If I were neglecting the place, then I'd expect people to be unhappy about it.

how boring its members are
That's completely non sequitur. If I thought WP members were boring, I wouldn't be unhappy that many of them got so worn out with the incessant server glitches and outages, they gave up on the place.

Alex has a life outside of this website
I'm well aware that Alex seems to have priorities that supersede WP.

Maybe if you had one too, you would be a little more understanding of his situation.
So along with "unless you can do better, don't complain" you're also implementing "get a life". Pretty lame, Fnord.
