I disagree with that. Its alot more constructive to send a PM hinting to a member that they may have crossed a line as opposed to outright banning them. Especially as some aspies dont realise they have crossed a line, for obvious reasons.

We've seen that some take warnings
(at least as they were crafted) VERY
poorly. The point is that the warning
only makes sense if it's done INSTEAD
of a ban. Since the mods are dissuaded
from banning, in most cases, there aren't
a lot of times when they should be making
them. This is really a matter of Alex's wishes,
rather than anything that the mods have much
control of.

EDIT: Oops, misquote fixed.

IMO, I've never been a fan of banning, whether I'm in the position to ban people or not. I much prefer to argue, using fact and reason to reach a conclusion .. though obviously I agree with banning for the more "ret*d" transgressions such as flooding and spamming repeatedly, that kind of thing. Generally I agree with Hadron that some form of heads up would be nice, especially in more obscure cases like arguments and matters of opinion getting out of hand.

This seems to be, for the most part,
Alex's view on the matter. Though, many
members have (and have revealed that they
do) sockpuppet accounts here, so obviously
THAT'S not the actual reason for the bannings
which were discussed. Some mods allow personal
feelings to enter into their decisions far too much -
one reason that I have to be VERY careful.

A warning does not have to be given
instead of a ban. A warning should be
given well before a member is close to
that happening, just something to the effect
of saying that someone is on the wrong path,
and it may be helpful if they changed their
course slightly.

I've seen a number of times where people have started using a new
account name and contacted them. They offer reasons such as they wanted a name change, lost logging information or in case of some women were being stalked. Thats not the same as a sockpuppet. A person using a sockpuppet is using it in addition to their primary account to manipulate the forum.

The people I banned were in fact banned for only using sockpuppets. They did have a long history of other violations. Back to the pointlessness of warnings. People are not making simple rare errors and getting banned on WP. People with long history's of abuse finally do something that gets enough attention to be banned.

Personally I think you try to antagonise problems on WP. Your need to becarefull reflects the fact that I can think of atleast 6 moderators that think your a problem.

Misquoting perpetuated. ^

Anyhow, giving warnings, with the
tact which some of the mods here
have shown, seems to just inflame
and anger the situation. THIS was
what caused the last site meltdown.

If it's not a bannable offense, a warning
is BS. If it IS, then it may not be sufficient.
Actually, I'd rather see temp bans in place,
perhaps with VERY GENTLE warnings to people,
but nothing that is heavyhanded at all.

Why would someone want to manipulate this forum? I mean, we're all in this together, exchanging points of view and life stories, and hopefully helping each other become better people in the process, what other agenda could there be?

This sockpuppet idea is very strange indeed, like something out of a teenage scary movie.

Lots of reasons. It is a source of power. Power corrupts, like in all good old fashioned human naure.

Heres an example:

Bob: "I think Jews should stop crying about the Holocaust"

other_member1: you a biggot!

other_memeber2: Your wrong!

bobs_sockpuppet: I agree with Bob.

bobs_other_sockpuppet: I like hitler.

bobs_other_general_mayhem_sockpuppet: someone should blow your head off bob.

Oh, well I guess hat's pretty bad, to want to blow someone's head off.

Can't we just get along, and agree to disagree?

(Love to continue, but gotta go to work :( )

But the issue with in this scenario is there is ample oppotunity for a member to be abusing the system without realising it. You need to warn people who need it off such a track, rather than simply banning them, them getting angry and coming back with another account with an axe to grind.

Which is my point. I suspect that if someone
simply came, and put up a sockpuppet, they
wouldn't immediately draw a ban for it, without
the other violations.

I can't think of 6 moderators who are active.

Plus, the only trouble that I stir, is when I see
the site being run in a manner which is at odds
with how Alex has stated that he wants it run -
which is damned good reason that a couple of
mods are VERY unhappy.

I would not immediately ban anyone. There several cases were families are sharing IP addresses. But when thats ruled out they are banned.

Maybe you have convinced yourself and alot others your a champion of free speech but the reality is your a champion of obscene speech. Freedom of speech on an autism board is to say something like "I support a cure", or a quaky treatment like chelation without being banned or having your posts removed.

Why in the world would Alex not be lenient towards me?

Again, no more obscene than I see in my
free local paper, which carries the column
savage love. Luckily, while material which
is intended to only titillate is probably deemed
pornographic, I think that Alex has stated that
frank discussion of sexual matters is well within
our rights - regardless if it offends you, OR other
mods.

And, I champion free speech EVERYWHERE on this
forum - not just what you'd term obscene. There just
don't tend to be too many cases where the mods seem
to jump on it: I've only seen it in the case of attacks on
the staff. And, the lesson seems to have been mainly learned.

Freedom of speech is general, and promotes greatly
to this board. Hindering it makes people afraid to
discuss all matters. Don't think that we are ALL
asexual.

I say as out of line?
