It's both. Something happens to the body when you do excersise, for fat people, exercise will help them relating to the health of their bodies, even if they don't lose the desired weight.

A good advise for fat people would be to do exercise for no reason other than their own health, not for pleasing other people and try to fit into an accepted social position, it's not worth the effort for it, just for the sake of having a good health.

This may sound PC perhaps, but I believe that the 'no genetic' argument can be used by bullies as an excuse, such certainty about the issue is something to worry somehow, especially if you distrust people, like I do.

And that is why so many overweight people remain overweight - they set the wrong goal.

No People are overweight because of a genetic predisposition they have, as I've said before. If being thin means being unhealthy, which it does for a majority of fat people, since it means a major disruption overall to their body's systems. You can't make a person who is genetically predisposed to bein thin fat, you can't make a person genetically predisposed to being fat thin. The goal should be HEALTH, not thinness.

Actually the no genetic argument has, and still is used by bullies as an excuse. The idea that fat people are able to and should meet the requirements for a thin ideal, is a main arguing point for people who would like to see fat discrimination continue.

It is not a concern for health, it is someone who sees someone who is vulnerable due to society's prejudice towards them, and preys on them. I am healthy at my size, that is a fact. My doctor knows this as well. I have tried to loose weight through diet and exercise, which made me unhealthy. I don't think sitting in bed due to exhaustion from a lack of nutrients and energy, which is exactly what I was doing when I went on Jenny Craig the last time, is worth being thin.

It seems some people just can't understand that everyone comes in different shapes, colors, and sizes, that is nature. Belittling me, or someone like me, over how much I exercise or what I eat is the behavior of someone who doesn't understand that everyone's life isn't their buisiness.

This thread was created in the hope that people would be able to set aside their preconceived prejudices, or their self imposed right to be the food and exercise police to someone, so that people who are plus sized don't need to be concerned that when they enter Wrongplanet's chatroom and reveal they are fat, that they will be bombarded by statements that something is wrong with them. They're not eating right, they don't exercise enough, do you know any other group of people in this day and age, who are told they not only should take that kind of public scrutiny, but that they deserve it. All for not being born the right size.

We have learned not to be prejudiced against those with different colored skin. Being a different size for most people cannot be changed, just like skin color. When you harass or belittle someone for not being thin, it's like antagonizing someone who is darker skinned for not behaving White enough.

Whoever doesn't think being fat can be genetic, they really need to hit the books or watch the Discovery Health channel and keep their eyes out for shows about fat people. They talk about why they are fat but some are fat just by eating too much and some are fat for medical reasons.

There is a bizarre case out there where every time you eat, you gain, your body doesn't use it like it's supposed too but stores it as fat instead. All our bodies do that if we quit eating because our body goes into starvation mode but with these people, their body does it for no reason and they haven't even quit eating. No matter how little they eat, they still gain.

I have also noticed not every one can lose weight. We all know the less calories you have, you lose weight if your body had less than it needs. But that doesn't work for all people because it depends on their metablism. With me the less I eat, my weight goes down but that doesn't work with all people because my mother told me. The older you get the slower your metablism gets and it's harder to lose weight. My mother doesn't eat much but she is still the way she is, over weight. She does not sit on her ass all day, she works around the house taking care of it and the garden. She goes shopping and gets what she needs.

Yes, the tendency for obesity is a genetic factor. However, so is cancer. In both cases, steps can be taken to improve the situation. In both cases, steps can be taken to minimize the effects of genetics: eating less and exercising more, and abstaining from tobacco and alcohol use. So:

- Burning off at least as many calories as one eats will prevent a person from gaining weight (Conservation of Energy).

- There is no such thing as gaining five pounds from one pound of food (Conservation of Mass).

- Less than 2% of all obese people has some kind of glandualr disorder that leads to obesity (Medical fact).

If you have a gene for obesity, then you'll just have to work hardy that others to curb your appetite and stay active. It really is just that simple.

The key phrase is "... all you want..."; if all the exercise you want is walk once from the couch to the kitchen and back again every hour, then you'll never lose weight. If all the exercise you want involves lifting the remote to change channels, then you'll never lose weight.

In order to lose weight, you have to exercise as much as you need, and if you need to walk five miles each day to lose weight, then just get out of that chair and do it!

Never make Want more important than Need!

No. People are overweight because of consistently eating more calories than they burn off. This can be influenced by genetics (ie some people will, because of genetic influences, have a bigger appetite, or may burn off calories more slowly) but genetics is not the cause of obesity by any stretch of the imagination.

Do you ever get the impression that they just don't want to admit the truth?

1) Pontius Pilate was the Roman governor who sentenced an innocent man to death by crucifixion, just to appease the local religious leaders.

2) People become and remain overweight because they consistently eat more calories than they burn off.

3) Nobody wants to admit that they are somehow responsible for the condition that they are in.

You know, this statement can go in different ways, it can support your argument and it can support other points of view as well.

This being, that a fat person would feel they don't need to lose weight, therefore the need here would be more important than establishing the want.

The Why would be important to establish the Need and the Want.

As I stated in the rest of my post, Health would be the only valuable reason to do exercise, not for pleasing other people's view on aesthetics. That could lead to stress, frustration and self-steem problems.

PS - I am copying your way of using bolds

Denial of obesity is a very potent means of maintaining that condition. By denying obesity, a person then sees no need to lose the weight that is ruining their health. And by denying that need, they automatically abdicate any responsibility for their condition.

Granted, on both counts. The only reason a person should lose weight is to improve their health, and not to please others. However, healthy people are usually more attractive than unhealthy people (all else being equal) ... unless someone has a fetish for unhealthy people.

Actually, I prefer to use italics for emphasis, and bold for the final conclusion.

Ignoring Pilatus question on "What is truth?"
I ask What is the truth?

I often ask this question, how much dangerous has absolute certainty on thigs, depending on the use they will make of it?
How much benefit has absolute certainty on things, depending on the use of it?
And how much accurate is a claimed truth in the first place?

Funny thing is that a number of people here claim their own opinions as facts and as the truth, when it comes to be a mere opinion, and their on interpretation of things.

What you claim to be truth, is accurately your own interpretation of what you consider as fact melded with your own opinion and your unique perspective on it.

Quote:

There are some who admit it, but they have problems with it.

I heard a theory that there is something in the brain of obese people to cause them greater pleasure and greater dependence on food, more than regular people, I don't know how factual and accurate is this though, or if it had been debunked or not. I also heard, there are pills that kills hunger.

Talking about tolerance here, they have the right to be the way they are if they want to, as long as their health is in no danger, wanting them to fit a certain criteria for aesthetics, and discriminating them for that, is not something I would support and I would believe is not right, and I believe it would be useless and a waste of energy and time to make a huge effort solely for the reason to satisfy other people's judgement and opinions.

This seem somehow similar to the gay issue, with the argument of being a choice versus being born that way, in which this, neither seem to have a black and white answer.

greenblue,

I have no essential conflict with what you're saying. My point has been that people's choice of lifestyle is the primary cause for their obesity. You can not change your genetic makeup, and glandular disorders account for no more than 2% of all obesity cases, so lifestyle change is the single major factor that a person can use to lose weight.

The only cause for obesity that any person can be resonsible for is their lifestyle, which involves such factors as diet, exercise, alcohol, and drug use. These factors have the greatest, most common impact on a person's body mass, and they are also the only factors that an individual can modify by their own choice, short of surgury or other medical intervention.

Lifestyle is a choice, and obesity is mainly influenced by lifestyle. Now, while I am not trying to imply that anyone chooses to be obese, I am stating that if people are determined to no longer be obese, there are things that they can do about it, and the best thing they can do is to eat less and exercise more - not because they want to, but because they need to.
