I think the mods are doing a good job. I don't always agree with them. I don't always agree with anybody.
Now and then somebody says something I find offensive. That's the price I gotta pay for freedom of speech.

Did you say that wasn't proper? Did you march out on the track?
You were quiet, just like mice. And now you say that we're not nice.
Well thank you buddy for your advice...

Voting for moderators is one thing (there are pros and cons entailed as with any forum policy/mode of operation), but doing so 3 monthly seems excessive, impractical and likely to be highly disruptive.
I also find it odd that there would be a need or desire to 'de-mod' moderators. I can see the point in adding more if and when there appears to be more of a work-load than current moderators are able to comfortably address, but unless there is gross-misconduct of a very intentional kind, why get rid of an asset - ie someone willing experienced, and already proven in the roll?
Under the current system, there is no accountability to the membership, if you have a conflict with a mod there is no recourse and no incentive for them to be fair. We can debate the specifics, I simply pulled the 3 month number out of the air, but I think that a system that holds those in authority accountable is better than one that doesn't. Perhaps moderating should not be determined by popularity, but I think that would be a superior system to the current method of appointment by one person who can't be expected to keep track of everything that happens on the board. If anything, going to an elected system with more mods would ease their workload, improve the experience of the membership, and enhance moderator credibility by letting us feel like we have a voice in the selection of those in authority. The current system does "work", but other systems could work better, and make the site a better place for everyone.

Oh and for all of you who are wondering why I am proposing such significant and radical changes here is why. I am tired of being verbally abused here, I am tired of being a punching bad this place is supposed to be a sanctuary instead it is a lawless website where rules and regulations are rarely enforced I found out about that the hard way.
This is not acceptable behavior for normal user and most certinally not acceptable behavior for moderators.
Have you considered registering and posting at Intensity Squared or zOMG Aspies instead?
It is not wrongplanet's administration's job to enforce laws, thats the job of law enforcement - unless its a violation of COPA, Child Porn, DCMA or 18 U.S.C. 2257. There may be a few other things out there that they are legally charged with enforcing, but other than that - its up to the website owner.

Here's some perspective to counter the insanity:
This is 1 web site. If you don't like it, you don't have to look at it. There is much beyond WP on the Internet, and much beyond the Internet in this world we inhabit.
If you like the site but are distressed by the posts of one or more members, you can apply some kind of setting so that you no longer see their posts. I don't know how to do it because I've never tried it personally, but there are instructions in that FAQ sticky. A mod or one of the many friendly long-term members could probably also tell you how to do it. I think it's pretty easy.
Alex should be much more active on the forums.
Arrogance is not illegal.
Sarcasm is not illegal.
Cynicism is not illegal.
A sense of superiority is not illegal.
If you can find an example of where these have been taken to the point of abuse, please share. In my interactions with Fnord, we may not always agree - in fact, might be polar opposites - but when either of us takes a moment to point out to the other that we're heading out of bounds, the response is positive. And in general, I find Fnord's thoughts to be well reasoned and well written, even if the brusque tone might turn some away. I fail to see why a moderator doing their job under the ToS is being abusive - if you have examples or arguments, I'd be glad to hear them.
Please... Quit expecting Alex to 'save' things; we're all part of this community, and if things stink then -we- need to be responsible partners, not whining for others to do so for us.

1. I did not say that how Fnord acts is abuse.
2. Look through this thread to see how members were treated by mods. http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt64171.html
3. I am not expecting Alex to "save things". This is his website, and he should be more active and aware of the things that are going on on it.

It is?!
That's great. Thanks for pointing that out.
Is this a politically correctness issue?
well, the arrogance I would agree with that, but then, how many people here are not arrogants, and how many people show it and how many don't or how many are subtle with it? and well I agree with some of his points, and I don't agree with others, perhaps he is just not as good at being subtle, which is an aspie problem, isn't it? anyway, another issue here is of free speech, I mean, I presume everyone here have the freedom to speak their minds as long as it is within the rules, well, I actually haven't seen with my eyes, Fnord breaking any rule, other than he being un-PC, but that's me, and, as they say: "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it".
The only issue I have against Fnord is all the attention and popularity he is getting with this thread!
(btw, not getting the sarcasm in some posts can be problematic with the misunderstandings)

It can be hard on boards I know. This is the 6th board I have belonged to and I have had a lot of drama, especially on the 1st board I belonged to... its amazing all the stuff that can happen. But hang in there.. I hope you stay on the board anyway.

Taking a break.
Shades - if you want me to read something, please cite it... I'm not going to sift through twenty pages of a thread that, if I'm not mistaken, I had posted my feelings in at one point, trying to discern what it is you're upset out.
1) If it isn't abuse, then what is it? I'm not sure what you're upset about then.
2) See above. In the first page plus that I read, I was more disappointed in the behavior of the members than anything else. We have responsibilities to manage ourselves; giving that up to external controls is not something I can condone or advocate here.
3) He is active, having seen him in a number of threads incidentally in the past week; just because he isn't visible doesn't mean he isn't aware.
