Will the new edition of phpBB have an Ignore function?
I already have an Ignore feature - I keep a written "Do Not Reply" list (complete with reasons why) near the PC, and consult it when I feel the need to reply to some whiny, narcissistic post that's full of erroneous assumptions and emo ramblings.
It has grown by three members in the last week alone.

Actually, I prefer it if you keep a separate account. I.e. you use your normal account when you merely wish to participate in the forum, and switch to another account (that is clearly still you) when moderating/administrating.
It means that you are able to maintain the ignore list in your standard account. More importantly, you can't "accidentally" do things that a normal member can't do. Also, in some instances, the board behaves differently (e.g. for post deletion), for a normal member, versus one with privileges, when it can help to be able to see what a member is having problems with.
The other account (which should still clearly be you) doesn't keep ignore lists.
The two accounts also reflect how much of your time/energy is spent actively moderating. (Although the 1,752 of my posts that I can no longer access give that sort of hint.)
Once you get sacked as a moderator, the owner just blocks the extra account.

What if the other account wasn't clearly you, like putting on the mod hat was assuming a sort of group identity? Not like no one but Alex knowing who the mods were, but like everyone knew who they were but not which one in particular was making a specific post or performing a particular task? I'm thinking of the way that modding burdens the person chosen for the task beyond the actual job, the ways it makes it difficult to participate in the forum without people acting differently because of the mod status, and how that might be minimized.

I certainly take your point. In my case, I don't like privacy - or subterfuge. Additionally, I really don't think the "secret police(moderators)" sounds like a good idea.
On thinking a little more - maybe posts and PMs that were from "The Moderation Team" might make some sense. I can see a bunch of problems with that idea, but maybe they could be circumvented.
