Adding more mods will give a false illusion of safety. And what happens when the mods start doing stuff other than just cleaning up after trolls? What happens when they start making threads you care about disappear in the name of political correctness or some other personal belief? WP has become a healthier place ever since Alex started putting less emphasis on mods. A community this size has to be primarily self moderated or it will turn into a police state. That's what WP used to be, and it has since become more enjoyable.

That being said, I do agree with having people in each time zone who can clean up after trolls if that is indeed their only responsibility. But I totally disagree with adding more mods for nannying.

There will never be a completely safe message board. There is always the danger of emotional hurt, of being misunderstood, of being offended. Adding more mods to a board will not create any real safety... there's always going to by psychological risk when one ventures to express oneself in a group of people. Period.

I would agree with that (as I said) if and only if that were their only responsibility.

But what exactly is a troll? Sure, atomika was a clear-cut case, but what about other members or future members who are not so clearly in the troll category, but are still considered annoying and obtrusive? How will it be decided exactly who is a troll?

That's determined on a case-by-case basis.

Sometimes there will be errors and screw-ups but that's the price you pay for protecting the greater good.

I personally think random discussion should be deleted.

It encourages spammers. There was little trouble with SPAM before that place existed.

In my experience nothing attracts spammers to a site more then an RD section.

They seep into every corner of the site and bring down the quality.
