Just to update the apparently compromised user account situation - there is an admin option previously invisible to me: the author of a post can be changed by admin. That's all there is to it. No password/account hijacking required.
Once that's done it becomes indistinguishable from a post actually from the member.

What on earth would be the purpose behind that feature?

For example: when a bunch of (usually off-topic) posts are moved to their own thread, created by a moderator - who therefore appears to be the OP. Having this option available can correct that.

I'd advise that you don't use WP at all for the time being, at least until an unambiguous notice about the event has been posted. Having a quick check of this thread without logging on should give sufficient information about that.
Any updates regarding that advice?
P.S. Would the intruder have been able to modify the software libraries?

This person needs help learning to use the quote feature. Their post quotes (apparently by just copying and pasting) two different previous posts, by two different people, but does not say who they are quoting, nor is there any visually obvious indication of where the quotes begin and end.

^ A support sticky on that topic, or trauma more generally, should be worthwhile but that particular thread doesn't appear to be it at the moment. Perhaps one dealing more directly with supporting others?
^^ Thanks Mona - quoting corrected.

Here, the OP of the relevant thread has requested that an off-topic discussion beginning here be moved to a separate thread.

As you requested here, I just now sent you a PM listing the posts that I think should be moved to a separate thread, given the OP's complaint about the thread drifting off-topic. I think the off-topic conversation is an important one worth having in its own thread.
