My PM rights
I remember asking him if he got my email and he said he never did. I wonder if he ever read it since then? This was back in 2010 during the whole mod incident. So for a while I thought the Contact Us didn't work. Now I realize it probably does work but he doesn't care to respond or check them. Now it's Contact Me.
Sliqua-jcooter, I want to thank you for taking the time to post what you have. As a former moderator, there is lots I've observed and lots I've been left to fill in the blanks on. Your information explains a few things.
Would it be logical to conclude that transferring to other software would save Alex a lot of money, and maybe even allow him to make money? In other words, he has incentive to do so ... And if he isn't actually doing it, then maybe there are barriers he, too, would rather not have, but they are what they are.
To those asking why Alex doesn't answer all those emails, I can only offer my guess: he's overwhelmed by it all, in the same way many Aspies get overwhelmed by the thought of cleaning a room full of boxes of papers. Inconvenient for the site's main Admin to be that way, but it is what it is. I do believe he has done a few things to try to improve things but there may be barriers in that process, too.
Roman, as much as I feel for your frustration, and that of the moderators, here is something for you to consider: if the moderator who took your pm rights had not held Admin tools at the time, making it an option, you would have been banned. Picking between all this time getting to enjoy membership albeit without PM, or not being a member at all, what would you pick? Be grateful someone had that option. The rights are on the list and will be restored when someone with the right tools can get to it. But if they live to regret giving you back your pms ....well, don't give them reason to regret it, because they won't have a take away option.

Try to look at the responses that Alex has received in the last few years; complaints about association with Autism Speaks, complaints about every problem with the site. I'm sure there are a core group of members that support him, but there are probably many that don't even concern themselves with who is is at this point and what the history of the website is.
How many times do we see a thank you Alex comment for providing this avenue for support; not often.
Hopefully he doesn't get to the point, where it is no longer worth the effort of what he is able to do for the site at this point in his life.
From what I have seen on other websites, this site is unique in that it allows many points of view; it's not perfect, but it is the best avenue of support that I see for people with Aspergers, in general.
If he ever decides to give it up, I doubt there will be anything quite like it to serve the needs of so many different people.
I would imagine he is doing what he can, but we all need to remember he is just one person, that has a 16 hour day to keep his life in order, and he obviously has a very busy one.
Just remember he is one guy with Aspergers, not a business with paid employees; it would be best to enjoy what is here, and not bite the hand that provides that enjoyment. And that doesn't mean not complain, it just means not assume he is in it for the money now, and simply doesn't care anymore. This is very much a mom and pop operation, not superwalmart. That may be what he's trying to avoid.
There are already other websites that offer support. People come here because they like the format and feel comfortable. Would the majority like it, if it matched the format of other Aspie suport groups? I don't think so.

I'm hesitant to comment on whether or not he'd be able to save money, simply because we have no idea what the server load would actually go to. Right now, the server is completely overloaded, and all I can say definitively is that with a change in software there would be significantly less load on the server, which makes things run better for all of the people trying to use the site.
I agree with your assessment 100%. I'd also like to add that it's got to be off-putting when you go to take a look at things, and you see a bunch of people shouting that Alex doesn't care, etc. I know I wouldn't be motivated to do much of anything seeing talk like that.
Let's start a campaign of "Alex is Awesome" threads so he might be persuaded into coming back and doing his job.

Sorry for my lack of hardware knowledge, but is there any solution other than a software solution for the speed of the site. The direction I am headed here is, if someone were to donate the money, could more powerful hardware be purchased, that would help accommodate the load of the existing software?

You can *always* throw hardware at the problem, and obviously I'm happy to take everyone's money. But, based on the traffic levels this site gets, and the server resources it takes to support that traffic, it's waaay high. From a server resource perspective, this is one of our biggest sites, however we have dozens of sites hosted with us with 3-10 times the traffic that are hosted on environments that are half the size. That suggests to me that there is a lot of "wasted load" that could be eliminated with a change in software.

It doesn't sound like a software change is an option that Alex is willing to pursue; and if a software change means people won't be comfortable with the site, I can understand his hesitancy it making the change. I'm assuming the environment is leased from your company. Is there a dollar amount per month that you can relate ball park to way high?
$5000 a month more might be impossible for him to afford, but an easy goal to reach, if the right people supported the effort.

I don't think he's unwilling to pursue it. Last I heard on the subject, Toggi3 and Alex were testing some things out, but I haven't heard anything recently one way or another. Toggi3 might be better positioned to speak on that.
My "way high" comment was speaking of the relation of the traffic level to the resource usage level. As a general example, our monitoring system sometimes thinks the server is down, because it takes too long to load up a page. I also get about 20 emails a day from the system monitoring regarding the server load (it would go on all day, except after 20 it stops alerting us). My overall point is that this server *should* be able to handle more traffic than it does. Alex has already upgraded the RAM on the server once, which helped a little.
There are also major software challenges with adding more servers (which is realistically what we'd be looking at), much along the same lines as the current challenges.
I'm open to attempting to develop a solution, but obviously I would have to work with my team and Alex on the details, including the price tag. I know you're concerned and want to help, but there's not a lot of action I can take without Alex's input. The only thing I can really do on these forums is try to explain things as they are, and fix the things that are within my realm to fix.

Thanks for the information; it is very kind of you to step in and provide assistance where you can. It is good to hear that they are testing some ideas for improvement.
I do know that Alex has worked on a new version of the site, but if things had gone as I assumed they would based on the limited amounts I heard, it would have been up by now. My guess is something happened to stall it.

Noticed the following forum?
http://autisocial.freeforums.org/
I really like the section arrangements so far and the admin is the perfect admin for such a forum.
It's got potential. Will easily replace WP eventually soon.
I doubt it's a hardware issue. It's a software thing. He doesn't need thousands of dollars to pay per month. That's just ridiculous. And if he really does pay that much, then Alex is really stupid and he's being ripped off big time. But I know he's not.
So why are we still running away from the real issue here?
It's a software thing. Plain and simple.
All that needs to happen is find a better platform and possibly a better server (if that's necessary), and a bit of time to backup the needed database files and other files (like smilies and such). Then find a way to migrate the code to the new platform.
All the customized stuff are mostly unnecessary to backup and try to migrate into the newer one, so it's not as difficult as we're all making it sound.
What is really needed is time and motivation from Alex.
