Now THERE is an idea! The top 5 most popular members become mods! That way, the people who are the most benign, the most banal, and the least likely to impose their will upon others will be guaranteed to be in power.

I don't think most would vote for the most popular per se, but for those they think fairest. A few might vote spuriously, but most would be thoughtful about it.

If Dox hasn't been offered the position then the system doesn't work.

I really don't understand how he can be considered more divisive than Viper.

I don't post in many forums, but the only other person who is active enough who I think would make a good mod is Janissy. That's no slight on several great users who would probably be very good mods in a smaller community, but might be a bit afraid of stepping on toes.

just because they're popular doesn't mean they have the right head for the job.

Just because they have 10000 posts and dozens of friends here doesn't mean they're level headed and mature (our own Kip being the exception of course).

Things I reckon Alex looks for in a mod:
- Membership loyalty (ie. no talking negatively about WP or any members on other sites)
- Emotional balance and calm rational thinking (former/current emotional issues, suicidality, poor self esteem and regular haven posting will cancel you out)
- Good history of obeying the rules here (no warnings, definitely no former banned members)
- Emotional sensitivity and good empathy skills
- No extreme left or right political stances, no obscure or anti-social beliefs.
- Likeable and welcoming to new members
- Not being a "baby mod", ie. one of those people who constantly post in the mod attention thread for the ulterior sake of making their presence known in hopes of being considered a mod. This behavior by people is so transparent it's not funny.
- Nobody who explicitly volunteers obviously
And most importantly;
- Respect for Alex himself

Heh, thanks for the vote of confidence, though I'm not sure I agree that I'd be less divisive than Viper; I can picture the user exodus now...

I don't think anyone needs to worry though, as a formerly banned member with a no nonsense demeanor, a lot of odd political beliefs, who's publicly criticized Alex in the past, I check a lot of Blue_Bean's boxes. I agree, Janissy would be an excellent mod, my own #1 pick, but I believe she was offered the position once before and turned it down.

Damned if I know what Alex looks for in a mod.

Still can't figure out why I was selected.

But we'll consider the suggestions in this thread.

I don't think Alex puts that much thought into it. Maybe he did once, but lately he seems to just pick somebody on a very few impressions. How could he do more? Until recently he was rarely on the board for the last 2 years at least.

And no one said, I believe, 'voting for most popular'. It was just members voting to select mods. Critics inserted the assumption it would be a popularity contest.

Actually, up until recently, he went off the suggestions of Cornflake and Tallyman.

That is probably the best way, all considered. To have the mods choose. They know best what's needed and are likely to pick someone who will share the load responsibly.

Btw, in the mod departures department I don't recall one name coming up. Spongy. He/She was active at times.

Anyway, here's the thing. That one batch of mods left for a reason(s). It was not solved by bringing up a new site online. That was not the key issue. So, if bringing the new site online and selecting additional mods is all that Alex does, then the problem(s) remain and will resurface again.
