Overrated in that it usually causes some people to view you in a negative light, and at times it can be a lot of work, for free no less, but it is still quite necessary.

Maybe that is what you view moderating as. Most I have known do it because they want to be of benefit to the site actually and give back some good.

I never asked to be one. Indeed, people kept on putting my name forward after the recent spamming fiascos, but I refused, at least until Alex actually upped and made me a mod. I was afraid I'd start abusing the power, but I don't think I have, so far...

The moderator position comes with power. Ignoring the responsibility involved, along with the likelihood that people will expect moderators to abuse that power, it is easy to see why some would want it. The key repeated word. Power. A position of authority. A feeling of control.

People who got to be CoSysop's on my time with limited rights had explicit interest in topics and fields of knowledge I didn't have. When you act as SysOp or moderator, you simply has to draw a very flexible thin line of appropriate/unappropriate with rules set as firm as possible in as a few words as possible... and se it from a flexible perspective. There's always the grunts, the wannabees, the newbies, the accommodated people feeling cozy in the chat, and those who has absolutely outrageous hate to the topic and want the topic beeing sent to hell for cooking over. And so on.

Most people asking to be a CoSys was simply wanting the power and worship. They got neglected. But honestly people that realy knew what they talked about could get a CoSys+ status with ability to change users status because they where simply totaly snowed in on the subject and didn't care a dime about the other topics in the discussions. They where, and is in my opionion, the best CoSys I've ever had in their specific field of knowledge, and they happily warn a user for misbehaviour a couple of times instead of throwing in the big axe for a mispelled word of honour.

Maybe that's why my BBS survived for 17 years on various software and is still known as a BBS to remember (and is still there, I''ve just haven't found the goddamned mediaconverter between 10-baseT and 10-Base2 that my 'miggy has (remember, its from 1992 so it's celebrating 14 years computer time, it's only a teenage computer! Going into puberty.).

Worship? Cool, I could go for some of that. Somehow though, I don't think being a mod is any help there.

You Mods are ruining WP!! Turning into petty tyrants when Alex's back is turned. All he
wanted you to do was to delete SPAM. PERIOD! Some of you have megalomaniac
tendencies and seem to be dangerously mentally and emotionally unbalanced. You
have no business trying to run a support forum. I appologize for my bluntness
whatever, i'm not sucking up to you ppl just because you are trying to get me banned.

I think we are helping WP. So f*****g what if I'm a bit unstable right now. It doesn't prevent me from doing a decent job moderating.

Care to elaborate on that by giving an indication as to how rather than simply making accusations that are otherwise baseless?

Oh, and I edited your quote since you didn't use the italics tags correctly. Hopefully that's not a problem.
