The focus is supposed to be on solutions.

Yes I know he is able to look after himself, that's not the point though.

But what if that one person is part of the problem? I'm not saying he is or he isn't...just saying what if?

Just a thought: Why don't YOU do it instead?

Imagine how much time and effort would be saved if only you were the first person to greet newcomers with a fully detailed explanation of the "Thou Shalts" and "Thou Shalt Nots" of this website.  Imagine how much better life would be for us all if only you would just greet newcomers instead of trying to dictate how the rest of us should behave.

This sort of responce makes me wonder if there is a way that a newcomers posts (for the first 50, for example) could be hidden from the view of other members who would prefer to only deal with those who "know the rules", in order to give the newcomers a chance to settle in and meet some other members before they are set upon.

We come up we a better solution than a mob mentality. More of the same thing we take issue with seems hypocritical to me, it makes me wonder who will be next?

Great idea!  Segregating the newcomers so that no one else has to put up with them until they've learned The Rules and proven themselves would not only weed out the trolls, but would also discourage spammers!  How soon can it be put into practice?

If it is not one person, then it will be another.  This "mob mentality" of which you speak includes The Mob's determination to find someone -- anyone -- to be the target of their anger and frustrations.  As evidence, just look at what The Mob is actually complaining about: not infractions of The Rules, but the reporting of those infractions.  Add The Mob's presumptions of evil intent, and you have a mentality that is simply looking for a scapegoat -- it does not matter who; if not one person, then another will do.

^ I was simply pointing out one tiny behavioral issue, that's all. If you disagree that it's an issue (or was an issue that one time) then I guess we're done here. No harm meant. Also, I'm neither angry nor frustrated. Not sure how you came to that conclusion from my posts.

Would you perchance have an alternative solution to suggest? One that addresses the issue of being ...an undiplomatic duck towards certain members so that we can steer away from a perceived need for mob rule to address the issue. :)

Yes: More moderators and moderatorial involvement; greater emphasis on infractions of The Rules than on members' personal indignation; and swift, decisive intervention when Mob Rule takes over a discussion to gang up on just one member.

Wonderful!

How do aspies control themselves at work in such a situation where the rules are broken?
Explain over coffee? Snitch, both, nothing if it's minor? My friend goes for a walk with his headphones and waits till his anger has subsided and figures out the best way to deal with the problem when he's calmer.

Correcting a new member by reporting him is like opening the door to a new guest who comes for the first time and inadvertently puts his coat on a chair and is greeted like this:

What! why are you doing that, putting your coat there I am calling the police, there is a coat stand can't you see, everybody knows it's there dummy."

I personally would PM a mod, not air it for all to see, explain that the threads need merging and not involve the new member at all. Ask the mod to tactfully explain if this becomes a habit. I learned by trial and error myself :D .

You should be a moderator.  That way, there would be someone to explain to me why others disagree with my actions that do not break the rules instead of inciting unnecessary hostility against me.

Ok, I'm trying to see in this solution where you hear the consistent message and embrace the responsibility of self moderation.

I'm guessing here, if the place was better staffed and managed then you wouldn't feel the need to help out by identifying problematic behaviours?

I don't believe that it should be up to ASD volunteers/mods to regulate adult members if I'm honest, doesnt seem like an equitable way to treat them, seems like a way to burn them out.

She should be a moderator. She was able to explain my point of view in a way that I could not.

Peace out, everyone. There have been some good ideas here interspersed with some nonsense ones such as hiding new members from view as if they need "earn their stripes" but please let's not have any personal verbal slugging here.

I don't see a problem with how new members are welcomed here although it's mostly the same folk who do that - and we're grateful to all of these folk. Just wish a few more would join in. The rules are in stickies on most forums so if one wants to find them its not so difficult - although a better format design would have been nice.

It's very likely that a list of potential new mods will be submitted to Mount Olympus soon, so watch this space!

We can barely form a herd - let alone a mob! It might seem like a mob at times, but that needs to be addressed on a case by case basis and each perceived "mob member" (which doesn't exist...) need to know where and how they crossed the line. Apparently the Rubicon was a pretty small river...not exactly the Rhine.

Now I feel guilty about my posting style again.

If I welcomed every new member here then my whole first page of my posts would be all "welcome to Wrong Planet" posts.
