Thanks. We need more of this especially on PPR! In real life, people snap at friends and family but saying sorry is important to mend broken bridges.

By the way, I've never agreed with the quote from Love Story that "love means never having to say you're sorry". Of course in a relationship it depends on circumstances but that phrase sounds like a licence for unregulated behaviour hiding under a pretext of "love".

Now I feel guilty about my posting style again.

If I welcomed every new member here then my whole first page of my posts would be all "welcome to Wrong Planet" posts.

No need to feel guilty at all. And you don't have to welcome every new member - just maybe one or two that appeal to you - perhaps who have similar interests - if every veteran member welcomed every new member it could overwhelm the whole system! :D

Not everyone wants or needs to do that.

So people were piling up on fnord for his autism?

Don't you know people with autism are religious about rules and if they are broken, they do something about it. I thought members here would be understanding about it.

I agree that reports should be taken to PM so members don't feel shamed or bullied. Or simply hit the report button. Then no one will know who reported them and who did the report and how many people did it.

And I don't think fnord reporting a member posting two same threads was his intent to get that member banned or do it to shame them, I think he just wanted the mod to merge them and have that member be informed about it.

Agreed, duplicate threads should be merged with post with earliest post time given OP status.
Who is arguing that point, not me,I have made post merge requests myself recently.

PM is best. Even if we're all offline one of the mods will see it when they log in and see in our emails. It's best if we can respond within 24 hours max, I'd say. The sooner the better. Indeed it's not about getting anyone banned or shamed.

also agree with VS that the earliest post stands and later ones merged to it.

The last time I tried to use PMs with all the mods at once, the system would allow only one recipient per PM.  Normally, I would just copy all the active mods names from a TXT file, and paste them in the send to box.  Is this another glitch in the system, or just a new "undocumented security feature"?

It has always been a peeve of mine that either the same rules should apply to everyone, everywhere, and all of the time, or they should never apply to anyone at all.

It might take days before a response to a 'Report' button becomes apparent, and during that time a member (new or old) could be making the same infraction over and over again, thus making the problem worse and leaving an even bigger mess for the mods to clean up.

I have no intent to "blame and shame" anyone, despite what my detractors may say to the contrary.

My guess is an "undocumented security feature". Maybe a list of moderator 'usual' working hours might help you get to a moderator sooner.

It's exactly as simple as this. And if it was enforced, this whole thread wouldn't have been necessary.

It only took 50+ pages to nail it

Actually, I have mentioned it several times in the past 10+ years, but I think you are the first to actually acknowledge it.

I would fully agree with this statement,no argument from me,rules should apply equally to everyone at all times.

But you Fnord, don't treat people well, and if that's not against the rules,it should be!

If not treating people well was a bannable offense according to The Rules, there would be only a few members left on this website.

Check your behavior before you check mine.

I don't remember how clearly I've stated it before, but it's the core of the issue for me too and others expressed similar thoughts.

I still see this as a moderation problem - the user problem developed from it, as a natural consequence.

I thought some new people were supposed to join the mod team? :?
