I have a big problem with one of the WP ads. A BIG one.

The one that is against gay marriage in Maine. It is possible only I see it because it is region targeted, but it really annoys me. For a site all about equality and understanding having a banner about a group of people who want to deny other equal rights is wrong. I live in Maine. *I* am not gay, but some of my friends are. Even if they were not, I am shocked that WP would endorse this kind of ad.

I just had one below my user stats sidebar that said "Should 2nd graders be taught about homosexual marriage?" The ads are inappropriate for this forum, if the site owner endorses and displays anti-gay messages, it's time to find a new place to visit.

This site uses Google Ads, they have to take what Google gives them, and Google doesn't discriminate about who's money they take. If the ads bother you that much, run FireFox and install Ad Block Plus, you'll never see ANY ad again.

WP doesn't choose the ads, Google does.

Yup.. what the above two posters said. It's almost impossible to control them.. I think ads from certain sites can be blocked, but those advertisers just come up with new ones, so it's not effective.

I think crazymeds.us explained it well:

In keeping with HON Principle 8, I don't exercise any control over the ads that show up from Google's AdSense ads. They are mostly based upon the content of the pages and magical stuff that happens on Google's end. I have exercised a minor bit of control in the past, attempting to filter people who sell that bogus lithium orotate. But now that I have a page on that crap, you can make up your own mind about it. I didn't even try to filter the dodgy pharmacists, there were just too many of them with ever-changing URLs.

I have to agree that it is getting pretty ridiculous, some of the ads we're seeing. I think it's good to know how the membership feels, in case another option for advertising ever crops up. Not my department, just how I personally feel about it. We need ads to stay open, but if there are ever options on controlling them a little better, the site owner should know that the membership would really, really appreciate it.

Well, it may have been region targeted when you saw, but I saw it while reading this thread. Topically related no doubt.

Do go ahead and dislike inappropriate ads, but, as others said, realize that site did not choose the particular ads.
