WTF?

Care to at least give me an explaination? Instead of IP banning my arse with no explaination and no official warning? You know thats a dictatorship.

You aren't letting me have my say. Hoping I'll just disappear? I'm not going to let this go away lightly.

I'm pissed off about the lack of professionalism, and i'm double pissed off that now a whole bunch of people are left hanging in a thread I made where I was delving into the deep stuff to try and help them eventually.

If it was to do with what I said to that troll in that other thread... You might want to read what he said in mine before taking such drastic action and making such sweeping generalisations.

I'm assuming he hasn't been told off? Let alone banned?

I wouldn't be surprised if you just ban this account straight away too, furthermore proving that you pretty much tape peoples mouths closed with duct tape and attempt to bury them.

Is it one of those IP address attached things which can stop you acccessing WP, and you need to switch off your computer completely for a couple of hours until the ( black listed ) IP has been reallocated to someone else?

I've had that once, and it was very disturbing too. Lau has explained how it works somewhere. It's an IP thing which happens because of people using an address to run a "node" for untraceable internet activity, and which then gets binned, and ends up in the pool again, and can be allocated to someone who has done nothing wrong, but it looks/feels like it when WP says you aren't allowed etc.

IP banning is very imprecise as most people do not have a static IP.

Try switching off your computer for a couple of hours and coming back to it. I think there may be a quicker way to shake the "node" IP but I'm hopeless at computers so don't know how to do it.

In other words, I think it is unlikely that you have been banned if you had no warnings, pms, etc, and I suspect it's this other thing which can happen to enyone.

If you haven't been notified of a banning, nor been warned, and if what you are getting is some sort of formula screen messsage about not being allowed to access or post on WP then it is likely that this isn't a banning, but a completely unrelated problem, and unless someone else on here has a better idea the way to get rid of it is to switch everything off, ( on your usual computer ) for a couple of hours, and the IP will be put back in the pool and allocated to somebody else. And you will be able to post as hale-bopp again.

You're presumably posting from another computer right now, right?

Here is the answer lau gave me the time it happened to me:

What is a "TOR user"?

Was told this morning that I am TOR user, ( unbeknown to me ), "critical error" etc, and that could not post. Anyone else get this?

It seems to have gone away, but don't know why it did it. Was worried that it was that global worm.

Sorry. Tor users must get permission from the site admin before being allowed to post. You can email [email protected] to request an exemption from this rule.

This seems to be cropping up more often. I gave a detailed explanation, somewhere else, but here goes again....

TOR is a system that lets people access the web anonymously and untraceably.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tor_(anonymity_network)

People volunteer to be "exit nodes", which means that all the traffic for the anonymous users comes from those IP addresses.

The system is used genuinely by political dissidents, say.

The system is misused heavily by spammers, etc.

The TOR designers understand this, and provide means whereby sites can easily reject TOR users, via blacklisting all IP addresses used as exit nodes.

All this would be OK if the people who set themselves up as TOR exit nodes knew what they were doing, but many of them don't. They have "dynamic" IP addresses. This means that each time they disconnect from the net, their old (now blacklisted) address goes back into a pool, and then passes on to some other user.

The blacklists are not updated terribly frequently (as a TOR exit node might just be temporarily offline). I think I heard it was something like a month, as the time an IP address might remain "tarnished" by having been used as an exit node.

It would be nice if ISPs could make it part of their rules. They could insist that a user with only a dynamic IP address was not allowed to operate as a TOR exit node.

The Solution

When the problem crops up, it will generally be just after you have re-connected to the net. Just disconnect and reconnect - which should give you a new IP address. Just possibly, you might get the same one back. So do it again, but stay offline for a little while.

Of course, this solution is of no use if you do have a static IP address and wish to operate as a TOR exit node. In that case, as the message states, you will have to ask Alex if he will exempt you.

It has happened in the past a lot members getting banned with no warning or notification. I wasn't getting anything... it just kept saying my password was wrong and wouldnt even let me view the boards.

I wouldn't be so sure it's not a banning. I've "upset" the moderators here in the past by challenging what they say and do I wouldn't be surprised if this is a ban.

I don't think that WP would be able to stop you seeing the boards though? Even as a banned person.

Have they banned/suspended you before? Have you been told that it was your last chance?

Was the message you got anything like the one I quoted above?

Why don't you pm lau, who was on not long ago, or sinsboldly who might be on now, and ask? Explain why you got the second account, and ask what the reason is.

No. I've recieved a PM which I considered absolutely ridiculous a few weeks ago which I replied to and got no response.
