I have just joined recently and I love the INTENT of these forums. To have a meeting place for people of a similar kind is wonderful.

And I see a few people here and there with the WP Supporter logo. I am interested in becoming a supporter.

But why SHOULD I? All that I've seen in the last couple days that I have been a registered user is PERPETUALLY slow page loads, the forum's "style sheet" disappearing and reappearing, the forums themselves being down for HOURS at a time. And to top it all off, when the forums ARE down, the "forums are down" message includes a link to a YouTube video that doesn't even work!

Hell, it actually took me literally FIVE minutes just to GET to this sub-forum just so that I can start this thread. I strongly suspect that once I click the Submit button, it will take at least a minute for it to actually submit... that is if it doesn't time out.

So why should I be a supporter? Those of you that are supporting already, how do you justify supporting an apparently unstable and extremely slow site?

Is there something that I am missing here? I'm not trying to be mean, I really LIKE the idea of the site... but I certainly won't support something that functions like this forum is functioning in its current state. And as of right now, I see no guarantee that anything will change anytime soon.

because it is not always like this. The owner is making improvements in the time between Christmas and New Years.

Sorry you registered in that upgrade time, Philotix. Hope you have a better experience as time goes on. Most people come here because it is the best site of it's kind on the 'net.

but then, that is just our opinion,

i'm investigating moving wrongplanet to a cloud environment. This is how google is hosted (on a dynamic redundant cluster of computers). This could result in a drop in price and an increase in performance of x7

There is none other like it, and I suspect Alex will continue doing all he can to keep it available and functioning well for everyone who wants to be here. I do not know a detailed history of this site, but have you noticed the daily growth in membership and how many people are online at any given moment? Membership was 30,070 when I got here around 4 months ago, and now I see it is not far from 32,000. That works out at nearly 500 new members per month (and an average of nearly 500 online all the time), and I would not want the job of trying to keep up with that!

Stick around and hang in. TallyMan patiently comes here via dialup, and it will be great for all of us if Alex can get even any part of that "x7" he has mentioned ...

a lot of those newly registered users are spammers, though. Perhaps 200 a month are repeat spammers that I won't let gain a foot hold in WP . Perhaps of the 300 left only 200 make more than a few posts apiece before they drop away and that leaves maybe 50 that actually make WP their home.
The other 50 become spammers a month or so later, trying to circumvent my spam filters. But the eagle eyed membership usually reports to one of the mods and they zap 'em!

That is impressive, and I bet all the dollars stacking up in the server fund are real!
