I am writing a book about my experiences with Autism. I emailed Alex asking for permission to mention this site by name. The private message was received, but no response was provided. I assume that means no, so I will not mention this site by name in my book.

I checked the Terms of Service to see if there were any restrictions on quoting myself from posts I made on this site. My understanding of the Terms of Service regarding this is as follows:

1. By posting on this site, the owner/owners of Wrong Planet have the right to use anything I posted in any way they choose.

2. My own words posted on this site are not my property any longer once posted to the domain this site resides on, and Wrong Planet reserves the right to sue me if I quote anything I have posted on this site.

Is my understanding of the Terms of Service correct…that Wrong Planet can and will sue me if I quote anything I’ve posted on this site?

I haven't send this question to a moderator, becasue the Terms of Service states that they cannot represent this site in any official manner. I would like this question answered by someone who can speak on behalf of Wrong Planet please.

Thank you,
j0sh

Although Alex is the one to give a definitive answer to your questions, I believe I know what he would/will say.

  • Any mention of WrongPlanet is perfectly legitimate. Alex usually likes the publicity - and even bad publicity can be useful. :)
  • WP is a public website. Reasonable usage rules apply, so you can make some limited quotes from the content.
  • So far as your own writings are concerned, by posting them on WP you have NOT forfeited your own rights to them. You are at liberty to use them elsewhere.
It would probably be at least polite to ask Alex to confirm the above.

Thank you for the reply lau.

Anything I write in regards to Wrong Planet will be very flattering for the site and it's members. My intent is to express the relief of finding other people similar to myself, and how reading the things they shared about themselves helped me understand myself better. The only direct quotes will be of my own posts. I don't plan on quoting anyone else directly.

The likelyhood many people will ever read my book is very slim, but I just want to cover my bases just in case.

Alex,

Can you please repond to this, either here or via PM when you have a chance?

Thank you,

j0sh

J0sh -
Can you please reply if/when you get your book published? Title and ISBN would be nice, and you might be able to get some publicity out of it...

You just answered my questions too... I'm also writing a book about my ASD experience. Thanks, guys! :)
