I liked that column! It helped me figure out which threads were popular.

It's not. http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum13.html

What I see is Topics, Replies, Author and Last Post. Total Views is missing...

Yeah it shows on new posts but not inside the sections... I'd like a fix, I too found this column useful.

Well, he said he removed stuff, so I'm pretty sure it was intentional. Personally, I think it's safe to assume that this change is part of what Alex calls removing clutter to speed things up.

The total views column never gave an accurate count anyways, for what it's worth.

The total views column always gave an accurate count, for its purpose. In fact, it gave far too accurate a count. It has not given a precise count for years.

To save 2/3rds of accesses to the database, the count had three added to it, once every third access, on average. This results in a count that statistically becomes progressively closer, in percentage terms, to the exact figure. I.e. for small counts, it could be some way off, but as an indicator of high activity on the thread, it was very accurate.

I did suggest an algorithm to Alex which would have resulted in even less database accesses, but preserve the accuracy of the counter. He has not chosen to do that.

Note that, although the count is no longer reported on the http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum??.html pages, it is still being calculated - so there is no real benefit in not reporting it.

You may see, from doing a topic search, the thread view counts being updated. See: http://www.wrongplanet.net/forum-search.html
