Change phrasing in profile?

For the "Diagnoses" field of profiles, you provide only a list of multiple guess options. "Have Aspergers - Diagnosed," "Have Aspergers - Undiagnosed," "Not sure if I have it or not," "Family member with Asperger's," and "Other autism spectrum disorder" make it sound like dengue fever. How about upbeat choices along the lines of "Card Carrying Member of the Aspergian Alliance" and "Mad and Proud"?

"mad and proud"? What does that have to do with one's place on the autism spectrum? Madness and autism are quite different things.

Personally, I think the drop down choice thing should stick to standard labels, and cutesy stuff individuals can use on their own in their sig and/or (if they have enough posts) custom rank. I don't want someone else's cutesy wording imposed on me.

And I don't see anything negative in the standard labels used there. Yeah, they aren't "upbeat". But no reason they should be. They aren't downbeat either. Neutral labels that are neither positive or negative.

I hardly consider labels that assume that we are defective neurotypicals to be neutral. Using psychiatric labels is like called cats defective dogs. Little has changed since the days of drapetomania.

Well, then, good thing the labels used don't make that assumption.

You're reading into the labels more than what's there.
