In case anyone's unfamiliar with this thread;

http://www.wrongplanet.net/posts132468-start720.html

Here's a suggestion for a new WP rule; no asking for money or linking to unregistered charity sites that ask for money, It would apply to all members, not just the blatent spammers that do the rounds.

Please comment or do the poll if you wish to register an opinion. thanks

I don't see why it should have been allowed in the first place. Unless its directly from an organization or something else due to an actual cause we know isn't a scam, members shouldn't be giving each other money or any other form of information.

Normally I'm the last guy that would say that WP needs another rule, but I can actually get behind this one.

Definitely.

I seem to remember someone being banned a year or so ago, and the mod(s) explaining it was because the person had asked for money by pm.

Extending the rule to public posts/threads sounds a very good idea. :)

Didn't that person lose his PM privileges?

I think I know who you are talking about or was that someone else?

I think its a brilliant idea for the end of donations. In the arguement that I followed in that thread, I got the jist that advertising revenue more then covered this site's overhead and helped to contribute to the owners life, but this whole donation thing got people questioning where the money was going.

WP donations are not what is in question here. The proposed rule is in relation to WP users asking for money for themselves, or for other individuals, from other WP users.

The donation links that appear outside the forum are to support the site itself. That's isn't what this thread is about.

Users soliciting money from other users definitely should not be allowed.

This sounds like a good idea to me too. There's too much potential for confusion and possible misuse without it.

Option Three: neither necessary nor guaranteed to be efffective

Lene wrote:

Just for the record:

The site related to the origin of this thread was not *asking* for money. Rather, it only had/has a voluntary donation link not really much different than like right here at WP ... and even the thread referenced above (on previous page) did not have any request for money within it ... and the OP's intent or motive can actually only be speculated by us here.

So, and since (or at least on my assumption) WP already has a rule against solicitation:

No new rule should be needed here.

However, and just as with another recent thread not in the best interest of everyone here, there certainly *are* times when rules are not sufficient and some careful judgment needs to be exercised.
