WP getting waaaaaay too slow!

I know this is brought up pretty regularly, but I think it bears mentioning again.

I'm on a 16 MB/s cable connection, and quite often have to wait nearly 60 full seconds for pages to load during peak hours. That's just crazy man.

I can't even imagine trying to navigate here on DSL, or (god forbid) dial-up. (though, come to think of it, it's probably about the same for them, but still )

It's gotten so bad I often just give up and sign off lately. All I want to do is make a few posts here and there these days, and just that is eating up far too much time.

Are there any plans at all to rectify this situation?

There is literally no way to improve the site traffic during peak times unfortunately and I also run a 16MB that can go up to 20MB line too and I get pretty much the same issue.

It's on the servers side since there has been over 1,000 people online on the server all at the same time that the server cannot handle any load.

The only way to improve it is to repair/optimize the tables which normally works well with me when I handle my forum and it does also fix some glitches (I use vB).

Also, the server just needs upgrading imo but unfortunately, it can cost up to alot.

TOGGI3 on the other hand actually works in the company that works for this server, so I would ask him alot about this server and what he can do to maintain it.

Unfortunately PHPNuke's version of PHPBB2 is the most difficult forum software to keep maintained and optimized.

Or another option he has is that he can however upgrade the forum software to vBulletin (which is going to be difficult) if he's running Nuke but there are hacks available at vbulletin.org and so far there has been success stories but it requires him to have a vBulletin license though.

I open another browser and look at something until the page loads.

That's weird. I'm writing this on my Kindle e-reader's browser and it peaks at 900 Kbits/sec (3G) and 3 Mbits/sec (Wi-Fi) on the downlink but Wrong Planet loads in under 30 seconds for me! What browser are you using? I'm using a Webkit-based Mozilla 5.0 browser. Click here. If your browser passes the test, there's a higher chance the sluggishness is Wrong Planet's fault. If it fails, it's more likely your browser's problems. If you want to see how fast your internet connection really is, you can find out here (or here if you're on a mobile browser).

Thanks for the link. I tested my connection and it is 825 kbps:

768 kbps Broadband
825 kbps ***ME***
1000 kbps Fast 3G
1500 kbps Basic DSL
2500 kbps 4G (Wimax/HSPA+)

It's the fastest available here in this little village in the foothills of the french alps ( unless pay for a separate/special line ).

What is "DSL"?

WP has been taking a very long time to load for me recently, and sometimes doesn't load at all, telling me that WP is experiencing a lot of traffic etc.

I suggest you test your speed again. The more times you try, the higher the accuracy (if you average the results). After you test your seppd again, press "Share Your Results". It will give you a link that you can copy to forums (such as Wrong Planet!). You might also want to try the mobile version because it is more accurate at lower speeds (bellow 1.5 Mbits/sec).

Do you have a cell phone with an unlimited data plan? If you do, you might be able to teather your phone to your computer via high-speed USB. This can allow your phone to act as a 3G reciever for your computer.

Its slow for me no matter when I'm on. EST... 9AM? Noon? 4PM? 8PM 4AM? You're telling me those are all peak times?

those are all peak times. although 4am is less of a peak time.
