If you are talking about that little pic showing a series of number that you are to type in manually, that is to make certain that it is a person and not some kind of spam programm signing up. I don't know how effective that measure is, but it seems to be common belief that bots cannot make sense of pics in a way that allows them to derive numbers from them while that is a rather easy task to most people.

The security code prevents robots invading WrongPlanet, but they seem to bypass registration. 8O

I guess the reason is to prevent robots from logging in. I've never seen that security code thing until now. Why isn't it asked at registration in order to prevent robots from creating an account here in the first place? They can't make posts without having an account.
