This is the first time I've seen over 12000 people listed as browsing WP. It also lists over 1000 of them as members who have logged in. How does WP cope with the load? Is this why I've seen Alex's video come up more frequently, recently?

I saw that number as low as in the 400s just a couple of days ago and right after the security code stopped appearing at signin, I believe, and today is the first I have seen it in five digits. Something certainly seems to be changing, but I do not know what.

Yeah, I posted something about it in the Random Discussion forum. There are just over 17,200 as I type this. And the 'new today' is just under double the number of people who joined yesterday.

I'm guessing this is a bug in the CMS, coz if those stats were real, the site would be down.

I actually thought earlier today that Alex did something to fix the speed problem and allow for higher load, which would lead to an increase in traffic because there are listed 44000 registered members. However, I realise now that this isn't likely because previously, the site could hardly handle just over a 1000 people browsing during peak times.

The site does seem faster, yes, but I doubt the traffic has increased from 1,000 to 44,000 as a result, let alone the site being fast during all that.

It's still a little slow for me, although I haven't been getting the "too many people are posting right now" page.

It seems to just keep climbing. I'm very curious about why, though it seems we won't be getting any explanation. I don't know. I'm terribly uneasy about it each time I see the reminder. Twenty-seven thousand people reading my ramblings might just be enough to send me elsewhere. :?

The actual numbers of hits for specific threads are shown in the index, and this thread showed as having a mere 189 just before I posted here ... and not all hits turn into actual reads. So, I would not worry about numbers and just keep reading and posting. In other words:

Yes, all the world is a stage, but most of the audience seems to be sleeping.

Yes, but few people look in here (Wrongplanet.net discussion subforum) as compared to the places where I do most of my posting.

Take a look here and you can see actual numbers of "views" (hits) where you have posted ...

http://www.wrongplanet.net/forumssearch ... aybee.html

Those numbers actually are relatively low.

Most of them, yes. Looking through it suggests that perhaps I ought just stay out of General Discussion, L&D, and Adult Issues. Thank you, though. I do feel a good deal better (if still very uncomfortable) for seeing the numbers.

Although, I think it doesn't register as a view if you read a thread without logging in. At least that's what I've noticed when I browse WP without logging in.

Kaybee, there is some sense of anonymity on the internet, including here. I don't worry that much about how many people read what I've written here because they likely don't know who I am in real life. As long you are careful about what kind of information you post, it should be fine. Not posting any identifying information anywhere on the internet is a general privacy measure.

That's just 49 less than 30000 people. I find it hart to believe that figure is real.

36,791 people are suppodily online now.

Either Alex is purposely botching the number (which I doubt, as he's an admin, not a politician) or the CMS has a bug.
