What qualifies you to become a moderator?

Just curious. I know that asking about being a moderator automatically disqualifies you from being one but to be honest I'm not interested in being one. I know how forums work and moderation is far too much responsibility.

So my question remains: how does one become a moderator? I've seen people with far less posts and 'kudos' become moderators.

So, in a nutshell I ask: what is the methodology?

Getting recommended to be one.

Being a sucker for punishment!

I'd hazard a guess that (for WP anyway) it is being a member for a reasonable length of time and sticking within the site rules and generally being helpful or amiable with other members rather than confrontational or argumentative. It also helps if you report various rule infractions to moderators and show an interest in the site remaining peaceful and free of trolls, spam and infighting.

Meet those criteria and you will be pounced upon and sweet talked into becoming a moderator!

There isn't really a single qualification. Someone says, "we need more moderators." Someone notices you seem to stay within the rules and keep your cool in difficult situations and, so, nominates you. Alex is around, raises no objections, and completes the task.
