I like using inline links to help explain stuff I'm talking about, wikipedia style, but they appear as normal words so you have to mouseover to know it's even a link. Could they be underlined or something?

You can do it yourself using [u] [/u.] or [.color=n] [/color] (I put a period in the last /u sand in /color so they wouldn't disappear, n in color could be red, or blue, or etc)

The URL setup: [url=N]B[/url] in which case "B" would be the "word" that appears that you should put the coding around and "N" is the web address

Hope this helps!

You can combine the two codes to make colored underlines too! :)

If you press "Quote" on this post as if you were going to reply, you'll see how the following examples are constructed.

A WP Thread
A WP Thread

Or just paste the URL directly and it underlines itself:

There's a FAQ here outlining what can be done: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt32554.html

On a personal note, I will very seldom click on a link where the title is different than the URL it links to. I want to know where something is going to take me before I click on it, so unless there's some really compelling reason for me to want to click on a link, I don't even bother if it's not spelled right out. The wikipedia links are different because they mostly link to either different places on the same page, or different pages on the same site (and they make it very clear when they link to pages on *other* sites, probably for this very reason).

However, the default stylesheet for links is a bit stupid, and I agree there should be a bigger differentiator.

firefox gives me a little popup at bottom left of the screen when i hover over it with my mouse to tell me where the link goes. but i've heard that firefox is not the browser of choice for techie types

Psh. Them's a-fightin' words. I'll be waiting outside...
The only techie types I know who use IE by choice are MS fanboys, and they're beyond redemption anyway.

Same here - it has to be either on a trusted site or very obvious.

Yes. In WP's case it's probably just easiest and clearest to paste the URL - less typing, less fiddling with BBCode, plus it still looks like and works as a link.

Some probably do, but from my experiences Firefox has the edge - probably because it's very nicely tweakable.

I use SeaMonkey, which is the code base name that the Mozilla suite had, just before it was shattered into Firefox, Thunderbird, Nvu, Sunbird and a few other damaged leftovers.

....

Back to the subject in hand, I just override the CSS with:
Code:
/* Colour in post links */
.postlink {
        /* color:#F00!important; */
        font-weight:bolder!important;
}

I decided I didn't much like having them red, so I commented that bit out.

I suppose, to keep most links more the way I like them, I could add:
Code:
/* Underline anchors ONLY when hovered over */
A:active,A:link,A:visited {
        text-decoration: none!important;
}
A:hover {
        text-decoration: underline!important;
}
and even replace the earlier code with:
Code:
/* Make anchors all be bolder */
A {
        font-weight:bolder!important;
}

I use lots of other CSS, to get all the font sizes and colours the way they used to be.

As I don't like the stuff at the top of the page, I also use:
Code:
/* Zap rubbish at top of pages */
.demo {
        display:none!important;
}

Oh... and this all works in Firefox and other browsers. Even IE will let you have local CSS overrides.

So, I now have all my links working just as I like them, and consistent across the entire page... including the nasty top right corner ones.

I also got rid of the whole of the left sidebar, as well as the top stuff.

Code:
/* Stop the forced underlines on "My Account" and "Log out" (capitalisation?) */
A.topnav > U { text-decoration: none!important; }

/* Make anchors all be bolder */
A {  font-weight:bolder!important; }

/* Underline anchors ONLY when hovered over */
A:active,A:link,A:visited { text-decoration: none!important; }
A:hover { text-decoration: underline!important;}

/* Zap rubbish at top and left of pages */
.demo,.shadowbox { display:none!important; }

Copy the above, and put it a file called "userContent.css" in the "chrome" folder of your SeaMonkey/Firefox profile, wrapping it with "@-moz-document domain(wrongplanet.net) {" and "}" (so it only applies to WP). I can't recall if you can make it conditional, in IE. Other browsers has various ways of doing it. Look in your preferences/options/whatever, to find "user CSS".
