How do you impose a transparent background into the avatar image?

You'll need either a gif or png version of your avatar and any reasonable image editor which will allow you to define an area of the image as transparent.
It's somewhat like assigning a colour, except it's a "transparency attribute" instead.
Er, and that's about it...

Once an image has a transparent area defined the forum software will take care of displaying it appropriately - my avatar is on a transparent background.
For the smoothest effect I recommend using a png image file because that allows more colours than a gif file, although you may need to be more careful of the overall size as a result. Ultimately it depends on how complex or photo-realistic your image is initially.

For the gory details, possibly even instructions specific to whatever image editor you have, the best option would be a Google search.

Thanks, CF. I'll see what I can do...

I know this is mostly irrelevant, but it's worth pointing out that the forum software doesn't deal with the transparency. It just passes along the image and the HTML - so it's the user's browser that actually does the calculations.

This is important because some older browsers don't support transparent images, and browsers differ in *how* they support transparency.

 Absolutely right, of course.
Brainfart, that's my excuse...
