I am a bit irritated with quoting culture at WP. People often quote other posts at full length, including pictures and 4 other quotes. And they quote the very previous post even, which is useless.
I contibute to many discussboards where this is not tolerated - and I agree with narrowing it. It makes the discussions disarranged and unnecessarily long.

Am I the only one with this opinion here or is there a will for improvement?

I find it particularly annoying if someone quotes fifty lines and adds a one line comment. Don't think it is against the site rules though; just bad etiquette and thoughtlessness.

I don't like it either. I think a better solution than making it against the rules would be for the site software to automatically trim nested quotes when they get to a certain depth. That'll never happen, though...

It might in the new version of the site software which hopefully won't be long now. More modern forums I've been on don't allow posts to contain more than x depth of quotes, which should help to some extent.

On a vbulletin forum I'm on you can't seen to quote more than one post automatically. ie. you'd have to manually insert the quote tags and other people's posts to make a quote pyramid. When you press the quote button on a post with a quote pyramid already in it only the actual post of the person you're quoting appears in tags.

^ That sounds like the ideal solution.

The thing that annoys me most is people who quote something giant, then simply add 'QFT' or a similar expression of approval.
Not only are they making the page more tedious to scroll through, but they're not adding anything relevant to the discussion.

But I don't know if it was a pre-programmed add-on for vbulletin (one you can just download the code for) or if it was custom coded by the site owner. He adds a lot of extra gadgets and features to his site.

If they're a pre-programmed sort of thing I don't know if they'd be compatible with Phpbb.

All of the above!
It's infuriating to have a response quoting what it's in response to - posted immediately below what it's in response to.
Pointless. It simply wastes screen space and my time in scanning past it, and often an entire screen becomes filled with a few bloated text dumps of "the entire story so far".

People really need to get used to the "Post Reply" button and keep the "Quote" button for when it's actually necessary - and then trim what's quoted down to what's required.

I suspect that's a standard feature - or a very popular add-on because I've seen the same thing on a vBulletin system I've used - but I doubt vBulletin add-ons would be compatible with phpBB, and certainly not the ancient version currently used.

Great, even moderators agree. So lets do something about it.
Waiting for new WP doesn't seem very productive... why not add new rule right now? These are 6 years old! http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt12459.html

Mods should promote it in front of Alex and tomorrow all users could get PM about new quoting rule. And we start to tip this posts to mods and warn users about it.

What annoys me the most is pyramid quotes. My god, just delete the rest of the quotes and only leave the quote of the post you are replying to. I try to remember to do that if it's too long.

The rest doesn't annoy me.

A lack of quote button that quotes quotes (wow, confusing), would be a step forward, but none of this effects me because I only discovered the button 1000 posts ago and am quite accustomed to doing everything manually :P
I think some people abuse the function a little.

Usually, I do that for others. When I'm responding to something, I just take the liberty of just quoting the post I'm responding to and manually removing the rest so someone else's next quote won't be as long.
