I didn't realize that there was a quote tool! (oblivious)

I find it slightly frustrating if you want to highlight certain parts of a message or if you want to have multiple quotes.

For certain parts of a message, you copy and paste them into the reply box, then select the text and hit the quote button and it will quote what you've selected.
For multiple quotes, I just open a new tab with my reply in it and put the quotes in as I need it.

Just slightly?

Yes...

I see.

It's not that complicated. Just make sure each quote segment begins with the quote=NAME and ends with a /quote. You can just copy paste. And remember to preview your post before submitting to see how it will appear, in case of errors.

I have no trouble with it.

I haven't used HTML since school.

Not just you, but many people take some time to get the hang of it. You'll get it too; just keep trying.

Yeah its kinda annoying especially when I want multiple quotes. It took me a long time to figure how to do multiple quotes.

Quote button should be disabled. People do not know how to use it, there is no manual and it is useless in principle - it creates mess and horrible cascade quotes.

copy/paste the wanted sentences and then marking them with [quote)text(/quote] function is enough and teaches people how to quote properly

And modes, when you agree

why don't you act? Who should change this if you don't guide us?

Actually no, it doesn't - all that does is create unattributed quotes which then require the reader to scan backwards to find who is being quoted.
Rather like this: http://www.wrongplanet.net/postp4852629.html#4852629
This method also becomes unworkable when extracts from several posts are quoted and if you want a "proper" way of doing it, the name of the poster being quoted should be included. (which is how many people already do it)

There are more urgent things requiring attention here than minor annoyances with quoting behaviour and for that to be adequately addressed, an entire WP netiquette ruleset should be developed to accompany it.
But it's simply not important enough and there are enough complexities involved with moderating what is posted here - without complicating that further by adding rules on how to post it.

The quoting tool is actually very simple and easy to use as a few practice sessions would show, or examining posts which include various styles of quoting - but some people simply aren't that interested in the technicalities of it, and that's fine.
The point is that they get to say what they wanted to say; wrapping it in an outstanding example of page layout remains optional.

Yes, some improperly quoted posts can be irritating - but I've yet to suffer any long-term effects requiring treatment so I suppose I'll live.

I agree and have never thought of it as a problem. Occasionally members fumble it and mess up the quoting but that tends to be relatively rare. As far as I'm concerned it is a non-issue.

I am able to do it too. But nobody ever wanted me. Seems like people know their own posts when they see them. Or they do not care whom I quote, just like I do not care... because (to me, us?) the ideas matter, not internet aliases.

It should be... when, by who, can all members take part in this process and make it finally happen?

not Cornflake but TallyMan wrote:

Ok it doesn't matter people are messing this up "occasionally", find it frustrating and create threads complaining about it "ocasionally". Non-issue. What is an issue then? What has the priority so after dealing with it we can move on with this "non-issues"?

If this line of reasoning was valid, then a similar line of reasoning would be:

I think it should let you highlight a certain part you want then when you press the quote button it just comes up with the bit what you highlighted in a new post, already quoted so you don't have to do anything except write what you wanted to write underneath it.

What I normally do is just highlight the whole lot then copy and paste it into a new post then quote out the bits I want, but it's still nice to have the name of the person who wrote part of what you quoted, like ''Joe90 wrote:'' just above it. I know you can still do that but it takes a lot of fiddling about, which sometimes gets confusing.
