My parents have recently installed Norton Internet Security to our laptop and whenever I attempt to access Wrong Planet, a message appears stating: "Suspicious webpage blocked". Although - obviously - I have the option to enter the site anyway, I would like to know why this message continually appears. Does anyone have any idea as to why this happens and/or how to stop it from happening again.

What are the websites you're trying to access? Are they photo websites, or social networks?

I experience this problem with Wrong Planet which is a social networking site. Are social networking sites automatically blocked?

There might be somewhere in the Norton Community where you can ask about this - unless of course that site gets blocked by it too...
http://community.norton.com/

Alternatively, I would hope there's some means of reporting false alarms there - so at least WP can be taken off the "suspicious" list.

Norton is a virus within itself.

That is commonly said about both Norton and McAfee anti-virus; that the are worse than any viruses! Personally I wouldn't have either of those two on my computers; both are unreliable and have a reputation for giving false positives and similarly missing real problems.

I've never actually heard it said about McAfee.

That being said, As of 10 minutes ago, I'm using the latest build of Ubuntu 12.10, So it doesn't really matter to me in the slightest.

McAfee recently had an issue where one of their updates blocked any access to the Internet at all, which created something of a problem with being able to download the corrections for it...

Having handled that particular one on my sister's PC I was horrified to discover just how grossly bloated McAfee has become, to the extent that a more accurate description for it might be "parasite OS". 8O

McAfee recently flagged my site as "malicious" and blocked their users from downloading anything from my site. This only came to light when one of my site users reported the problem to me. I contacted McAfee and they acknowledged they had made a mistake and eventually changed the status to "minimal risk". In the mean time I lost sales due to McAfee's crappy software. I tried to find out more about why they had made the mistake but they completely ignored me.

Apparently there are lots of websites wrongly flagged as malicious by McAfee and in recent independent tests not only do they make lots of false positives but also give a green light to some websites that do host malware!

I think it's disgraceful if the website being blocked isn't given a reason in advance, along with a chance to respond - and McAfee's attitude to those who dare to query a block after it's been enforced is pretty shabby and arrogant.

My family used to use McAfee on our laptop, but my parents switched to Norton four months ago because we experienced problems similar to those you describe. We haven't experienced any issues with Norton until now.

I agree. No reason was given as to why Wrong Planet was considered in any way "suspicious".

May I recommend Zone Alarm? I use it, and have ever since my older-than-the-hills computer teacher recommended it in 2005. It hardly ever blocks whole sites, although I am conservative with my internet usage, I have never had a problem. McAfee and Norton are WORTHLESS! Even worse, installing Adobe Reader, I think it is, automatically puts some sort of McAfee ad program on your PC, which then pops up "warnings" advising you to buy the full program. I think it's called McAfee Security Scan. My new laptop came with Norton preinstalled, which then tried to force me to buy the full version. I had to hunt for the uninstaller. Buy a new computer, everybody and their brother is trying to force "security" software on you, which "secures" your computer like TSA "secures" an airport. All flash and bother, no real protection. Take my advice, get Zone Alarm. At least it blocks the annoying "drive by downloads" that the Russians are using to load malware.

No. Stop it. People like you are what give the Linux and Mac communities their reputations as being elitist fanboys. Switching away from Windows is not the default answer for every problem.

Oh, Gee, I'm sorry, I wasn't aware of how much of an a**hole I was being, I will attempt to kerb my enthusiasm to anything OTHER than winhell in the future. Seriously?

That being said, sliqua-jcooter Do you honestly expect me to believe that using a windows server outweighs using a linux server?

Do you seriously expect me to believe that Windows is the best thing for my PC?

I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 Beta 2, and its a LOT less buggy and bloated than Windows ever will be.

There's no actual viruses for Linux.

Think about that, Before calling me a Linux Fanboy.
