Why's this site use so much RAM?

Just this site, whenever I have WP open, my system uses 800 megs of RAM or so, and then without this site, only like 300 with Chromium open on, basically any other site. It's enough to crash and stall things a bunch, and it's fairly recent it's doing this.

So with Opera, RAM usage is fairly normal, highish, but still normal. Hmm...

it has been my experience that this site not only uses lots of RAM but also all system resources in general, i know this because i compared a W7 1GHZ celeron with <2GB slow RAM with a W7 2.3 GHZ multicore pentium with 6GB of fast modern RAM, and the latter actually works slick and proper, while on the former the pages wouldn't even load half the time. this site actually made my celeron heat up something fierce. my multicore pentium machine runs nice and cool in comparison when i'm on WP. the resource meter on the pentium seldom exceeds 10% resource usage, while on the underpowered celeron it often exceeded 100% even when not doing anything but trying to keep a WP page open- more often than not it would crash the machine. i am no computer guru, so when the malware detector said my celeron machine was clean i can only conclude that it wasn't powerful enough to use WP.

Worse than the normal WP pages, some of the moderator tools on this site are incredible resource hogs. If I edit a thread or ban someone you can fry eggs on my laptop afterwards! Like everything to do with this site - the software is old and bloated and not designed to handle the load of so many posts or users. Some threads are uneditable because the tools attempt to download the entire thread (some have hundreds of pages) to the moderators computer first!
