I think it would be 1,000,000X easier and better if you could upload any file size photo or resolution but like Facebook it just compresses it by size and resolution to something more suitable. It would be much better then me having to go into paint and then stretch my image smaller and then make it a .gif because the file size was still to big.

Heh - lazy, huh? (jk)
And when people complain because it's been compressed too much and made into a mess?
Really, it's much easier in the long run to take care of it yourself.
For Windows users (and Linux with Wine, come to that), IrfanView has some very effective image reduction tools.

I'll have to look into this "IrfanView".

It's really pretty good, and what I used for your shiny new avatar - which I see you're now sporting, and the size looks better than I thought it would.

I have no problems resizing my avatars in MS Paint.

Offloading image resize operations to the server would certainly be convenient - but like everything, there's a trade off. In this case, it's putting more load on the server hosting the site - quite a lot more load than just displaying web pages.

Since there are already performance issues with the site, it's not really feasible to have it doing image editing, potentially to the detriment of the performance of the site in general.
