trying to upload a new avatar - have followed instructions its not working
I need a dummies guide for this

You need to be more explicit. Just saying "it isn't working" tells us nothing. Did the site give you a message or what?

"Displays a small graphic image below your details in forum posts and on your profile. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 130 pixels, the height no greater than 160 pixels, and the file size no more than 15.77 Kb."

160 pixels high, 130 px wide, very small file size. This makes things a bit tougher...

The MSG was the site URL had no data.
After giving up trying google images I tried using one if my photos then file size became the problem how can I convert photos to a more manageable size?
I would prefer to use an image from google images rather than my own photos but it would be good to know how to do both.

Using something directly from Google images will be problematic because of the size requirements but if you're able to source the file yourself via Photobucket, Flickr etc then you have much more control.
