Looking on the site just tonight, I was shocked to find that Wrong Planet does not have a meet-up forum. I feel that the single most important thing any organization can do for Aspies is help them meet, in person if they desire, to help create a sense of Aspie community. Aspie community helps us find others like us, helps strengthen us, helps us learn from and get support from others. It is essential. The problem is, it is very hard to find others with AS in your local area. That is why a meet up forum, such as the one at www.asexuality.org, would be invaluable. I fully realize we have a list of members' locations, but this is very hard to search from, is outdated, and doesn't necessarily indicate if the member would be amenable to meeting. We have a friendship board(s), but this is more for friendship in general, mostly online, then in person meetups, especially if the person is only going to be in the members' area for a short time.

People should be able to post things like "I'm going to Massachussets for a few days in March. Are there any WP members that would like to meet with me then?" or " Any aspies in ohio want to meet?" or "How about a New England meetup?"

This is just my opinion anyway and I hope you take it into account.

Thank you very much
Kate

Well, I think alex and a lot of other members here feel that such a forum would be too small and inactive a lot of the time to be of constant use. Typically we don't like to travel much (although I know there are those who enjoy it), and it's usually due to things like moving or a convention or a meeting or something along those lines. Such a thing could potentially be posted in Member's Only.

Like the idea though. Me and Starbuline want to meet up sometime in the next three or four months (despite having the Pacific ocean separating us).

Welcome to WP, by the way!

it is a good idea, although i don't think a lot of people will ever 'happen' to be in belguim,
but i would like visiting england once and a meeting would be a very good pretext i suppose.

it's true what KBABZ says it will not be a thread/forum that is used very often, but then again why not, even if it only makes a few people meet, it could still be a good idea.

Yes it does sound like a good idea, though many people on WP live in the states.

Have a sub forum for people in Britain/ Europe and the states have their own sub forum and meetups in a place that would be accessible to the people that would want to attend.Guess it would take a lot of effort to arrange though.

The issue of potential pedophiles, and the liability issues that causes, should be considered. If it were structured for large meetings, not just two people, that would be much safer.

The argument of it not being used that frequently is also important to consider.

*award to lemon*

I agree with shadexiii on the safety factor, and the sub-forums (aka sticky threads) for each reigon is a nice idea too.

I think a meet-up is a great idea. Right now there are 637 people online. It shouldn't be all too difficult to get a couple dozen people to commit to getting together on a Saturday or something. If someone wanted to organize it, a sticky thread in the members section would probably work fine. The only thing I would suggest is that there not be any NT's there. I don't want to socialize with those people.

So I can't bring my friends who are eager to learn more about us? Aww...

Someone could always organize something out in the Northwest.

Speaking for myself, I find it difficult enough to go to some gathering with a large group of people. Knowing that some of those people are going to be NT's who will notice my awkwardness would make it even worse. Of course it is understandable if the home-owner, of what have you, is NT and wants to be present.

Setting up all events for the needs of a few, or the individual, is foolish. If there's something local, interested members could discuss the details before it happened. There doesn't have to be a set of rules that have been generalized for all such meet-ups.

I very well may get some support in the near future!

I do understand this, but my friends are such that they just wouldn't take this into account about who you are. Sure they'd notice, but they would NOT hold it against you.

Of course it is at this point conceptual, and I live in NZ, so no worries there. :)

Actually, this is a good idea but KBABZ is right about a dedicated forum possibly not being active enough.

HOWEVER, I may combine this meetup iddea into the existing getting to know each other forum.

vivreestesperer, I was in Baltimore last night but I've never been to Maine. Do you live in two places?

*award* (it's actually alex's first KBABZ award)

I think Getting to Know Eachother is a good place to put it under. Nice choice, alex!
