This new WP upgrade, are we supposed to do something? Or if I sign in to WP will everything be taken care of?

Just sit back. The forum will get locked for a while (meaning you can read but not post).

it was promised that all our info, passwords and posts will be carried over to the new site. the migration is happening right now supposedly.

but anyway i'm actually looking forward to seeing entire forums locked. does this mean i finally get to see the "forum is locked" icon?

That would also be the first time that I would of seen the "forum is locked" icon in the 6 years I've been (actually 8 if you count the period that I was lurking here before I registered as a member).

yeah, i wonder what alex and the other developers had in mind when they created that.
in case of an incredibly massive shitfest?

if we don't see the padlocks i expect a notice not unlike what happens when we have "too many people posting messages to the site and can't handle the load". we'd still be able to reply to blog posts and articles even if every forum is locked, that's not all the site is.
